"Donnie Darko" : Midnight Shows?

"Donnie Darko" has been playing midnights at the only art house movie theater here in D.C. the last few weeks (on Friday and Saturday night). Should be interesting to see how long it continues. The first time I saw it, it felt like an instant cult classic to me. Turns out it is. Was wondering if it's playing anywhere else at midnight around the U.S.?

A lot of films play during the midnight hours, doesnt automaticlly mean it's a cult classic..

hell this weekend Indiana jones and the raiders of the lost ark is playing at the nuart. I wouldn't really call it a cult classic.. more like just a really good movie.

Where in L.A. is it playing at midnite? I was only aware of it being played once at that time recently.

It just celebrated it's one year anniversary of Fri/Sat. midnite shows at the Two Boots Pioneer Theater on Avenue A in New York City last month. Richard Kelly was on hand actually for one of the nights, and hosted a discussion. I think that's the least tapped market in most movie theaters. I LOVE midnight films, and old prints of The Song Remains the Same, Dazed and Confused, The Wall, Evil Dead II, Fear and Loathing in LV and countless others will always have youth appeal, and I'd wish more theaters would take advantage of the old "drive in/make-out/stoner" market and run late night weekend shows. Even monthly would satisfy my taste.

Jack Skeleton- Which theaters in L.A. have those types of screenings? I love going to screenings of older films.

Off the top of my head lets see their is the Nuart on Santa Monica Blvd. this weekend like I said they are showing on friday midnight Raiders of the lost ark

Next friday will be Pink floyd: the wall
3/7 Annie, 3/14 Evil dead 2, 3/21 Goonies, 3/28 Ghostbusters(on 35mm print), 4/4 Big Lebowski, 4/11 Road Warrior. 4/18 is thunderball

Other places to see Midnight films (and check the local paper i.e. L.A WEEKLY or theater flyer for more info)

The Rialto in South Pasadena
University Village showed Pulp fiction just last week
Morvern Callar aswell

thats just a few around L.A. theirs a bit more in Orange county if you don't mind the drive.

Used to be big into Midnight films till I just got a bit more tired and started falling asleep earlier... ironic since I'm posting this at 3am

When you are at a local record store or something just look for the flyers near the door. they will steer you the right way for the month ahead. Look towards the indie Art houses and at theaters near colleges.

Thanks Jackskeleton. I realize every movie that plays at midnight is not a cult classic. However, there is a huge difference between a movie like "Indiana Jones" and "Donnie Darko". "Donnie Darko" barely made a half a million at the box-office. It's popularity grew by word of mouth only. And continues to do so. This way after it's extremely limited first run in theatres. It also continues to rise on IMDB's Top 250 movies of all-time voted by users (it's currently at #91). It's not your typical Hollywood film. A movie that wasn't given much support (if any) from it's studio. One that has caused much debate and conversation about it's story and ending. And continues to do so. Sounds like a cult classic to me. At least that's my opinion. As is one of the Washington Post City Paper movie critics:

DONNIE DARKO Start with Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Remove Jeffrey Jones and insert an oversized demonic rabbit. Stir in some time travel, add a town full of middle-class nutsos, and you've almost got Donnie Darko. Through the eyes its titular antihero, Darko pokes at the squishy heart of such modern weirdalities as infomercials, inspirational speakers, suburbia, and psychotherapy. Like many debuting directors, Darko's Richard Kelly sets his aspirations high, often leaving viewers unsure as to whether they're watching a sci-fi flick, a black comedy, or an extended music video. In any case, this 2001 film is a multilayered, richly symbolic work that's already become a cult classic. (KM)

I know the Nuart has a midnite program, I thought someone was saying that a theater in town played the film repeatedly at midnite more than occasionally. The answer seems to be no.

I remember seeing it in a few consecutive LA Weekly editions awhile ago, but I don't see it in there now. It must have just been for a few weeks. It is, however, playing at the New Beverly this month, which in my estimation is the best revival theater in town. The Nuart has some good stuff, but $6 double features like 2001 & A Clockwork Orange; Casino & Goodfellas; Jaws & Dual; Dead Man & Down By Law; Evil Dead 2 & 3; Ferris Bueller's Day Off & Election; (and that's just a samplingof the past 2 months), just can't be beat. They don't really advertise much, so a lot of people don't even know it exists, hence the financial problems they are having. They might not be around much longer so enjoy it while you can.

New Beverly

I live in the Northern VA area, what theater is it playing at? I might go check it out if I get a chance?

Visions Cinema. It's on Florida and Conn. Used to be the Embassy Theatre. And I just did a search for it on Google and didn't know they had a website. But then again, who doesn't these days. "Donnie Darko" is listed on the main page with a great picture/ad. Click on the link. It's playing this upcoming weekend again (2/21 and 2/22). Also on the link, some reviews (where another critic called it a "cult classic" ) "Donnie Darko" fan links, unofficial websites, the trailer. Very cool.

Rel77, call the theatre at 202-667-0090 and listen to the information about "Donnie Darko". It'll ring a few times, but hit 6 as soon as you hear the outgoing message. Apparently, the movie will be playing INDEFINITELY!! And oh btw, the lady on the recorded message also called it a cult classic "after only two years". Her words.
