Circus: Why didn't I see this @ box office?

I just watched the DVD, Circus (2000-John Hannah, Famke Jassen, Peter Stormare, Eddie Izzard). I felt the movie was pure genius. Does anyone know why I don't recall this being at the box office? Did I just miss it?

This is asking more about the movie than the disc, so moving to Movie Talk.

It only played in 8 theaters, and it seems like it only played for a week. It's box office total was $8,405. And no, that's not missing any zeroes. :) It was probably just a quick run to avoid the "direct-to-video" stigma.

since it played in only 8 theaters, could this movie be considered a indie movie?
