This year:

Chicago - Best Picture

Over The Pianist? Please.

This is just a personal preference, mind you. Musicals are interesting (I especially do like Sound of Music and Singin in the Rain), but Best Picture material? No. All 4 of the other films were better from a true filmmaking standpoint, IMO.

Would you consider 1964's "My Fair Lady" worthy of the Oscar for Best Picture?

Or 1961's "West Side Story?"

Chicago is a very entertaining and well made movie. I think it's refreshing that the Academy actually chose a movie like this when they usually fall all over themselves to try and reward a "serious drama" whether it is deserving or not.(A Beautiful Mind) I'm not saying it was my favorite film of the year but I do not think that it was a travesty that it won Best Picture.

Shakespeare In Love is a better picture than Saving Private Ryan, and I think it's a bit silly that people are still hung up about it ten years on.

Juno for best original screenplay. Thanks academy.

No, it wasn't. SPR is the better film...

Ok, I love TDK a lot. I would've probably given it a nomination for Best Pic but...it wouldn't have beaten Slumdog Millionaire.

I truly believe the aging and approaching dementia mind of Jack Palance read the wrong name, that's the only way that ridiculous performance could have won.

I think he's talking about Marrisa Tomei winning for My Cousin Vinny. and that rumor about Palace reading the wrong name was debunked

Yet it failed a Best Picture win...I'll never understand it. Of course...both of these films had what the general public may call...abrupt endings at best. I loved both films...but There Will Be Blood was a masterpiece. No Country For Old Men while very good and entertaining was ok compared to Anderson's film.

Pacino didn't deserve it in 1992, but they had to give it to him because he was robbed in 1974 when he didn't win for Godfather II. Art Carney won Best Actor in 1994, and he just didn't deserve it period."

.

This is why I stopped watching the Oscars, cause essentially it became a 'we finally gave you an award' show. Ron Howard wins for 'A Beautiful Mind' but loses for Apollo 13? Marty Scorcese loses for Raging Bull and Goodfellas, but wins for The Departed? Tom Hanks wins for Forrest Gump but loses for Cast Away, because Russell Crow got ripped for The Insider, so they gave it to him for Gladiator, when he really deserved it for 'A Beautiful Mind'

I could go on and on, and there are so many instances where they finally gave it to someone who deserved years earlier.

My pick for best film of 1956 would be Bigger Than Life. I'm not really sure The Ten Commandments is any better than Around the World in 80 Days.

No Country for Old Men is a better film than There Will Be Blood. The Academy made the correct choice, for once.

Nah, I'd give it to There Will Be Blood.

That was a far funnier film, but I would go with No Country as better.

Regarding Denzel's win for Training Day:

I seem to recall that his own reaction upon taking the stage at the Oscars was that he didn't expect, and possibly didn't deserve, to win. In fact, I recall that he made some comment about "killing two birds with one stone", in reference to Halle (a fellow black actor) winning just prior to him. I remember the comment causing some gasps from the crowd, and he blew it off by saying something like he was just playing, before giving his acceptance speech.

EDIT: I found the video of it on YouTube, and although he didn't say he was just playing, he did make the comment, and it did cause a reaction from the crowd.

Chicago already seems like a bit of a joke win.

I liked Crash OK but it didn't deserve it over Brokeback Mountain by a long chalk.

I gotta disagree. I thoroughly enjoyed Crash. The only reason I thought Brokeback was even considered was due to the content.
