How did your newspaper rate Daredevil?

The Detroit Free Press gave it 1 star. I have not read the accompanying article because I don't want to know anything about it.

The Detroit News gave it a D, which is like a 1 out of 5 I guess.

Pretty good review in the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

http://www.cleveland.com/film/plaind...0140257030.xml

Some highlights:

Spoiler:
It is also hugely entertaining, in large part because it is so oddly philosophical about the superhero imperative to work alone and outside the law. If it had a better central performance, "Daredevil" would be spectacular; but even with Ben Affleck at his most wooden, it's remarkable.

Affleck, who is better at doing publicity for his films than he ever is in them, is evidently smart and witty, and he has the bland, country-club good looks of a Ralph Lauren model. What he doesn't have is charisma. People magazine and J. Lo's endorsement to the contrary, he just plain isn't sexy, at least not in a way that jumps off the screen.

He comes off as too nice, or too cool, or both. For whatever reason, he lacks that smoldering, dangerous, intangible jolt that Michael Keaton had in the first "Batman," for instance, or Hugh Jackman had in "X-Men."

The special effects deserve special mention. Using overlapping sound and flashes of light and fractured image, visual-effects supervisor Rich Thorne and his team beautifully convey Murdock's overwhelming sensory overload. No wonder the guy dresses in that jumpsuit: Who can pay attention to fashion when House of Pain is throbbing through your brain?

The Minneapolis Star Tribune gave it 3/4 stars (B):

http://www.startribune.com/stories/412/3649079.html

Then again, this is written by a reviewer who felt that Who is Cletis Tout? was one of the top 5 movies last year.

The Toronto Sun gave it 3/5

The Toronto Star gave it 1/5 - but the guy who did the review is a complete moron...truly.

Ebert in the Chicago Sun Times gave it 3/4

Chicago Tribune (Michael Wilmington) gave it 2 stars out of four, which means that it was a bad to a barely passing movie. Here is the headline: 'Daredevel' starts fast, but superhero lacks marvel.

Here are the first and last paragraphs from his review:

"Daredevil" - starring Ben Affleck as yet another Marvel Comics hero - is a blockbuster wannabe that seems to touch all bases: zapping us in scene after scene with charismatic stars, ultra-glitzy production, heart-pumping rock music and lost of rock-'em-sock-'em action. But "Daredevil" lacks teh spectacle and sense of fun and dynamism of a movie like "Spider-Man" - even though that's what its makers obviously want it to be and even though its hero, in many ways, is just as interesting and vulnerably human a creation.

...

"Daredevil" is slick, expensive and filled with good-lookiing actors flexing muscles, but once it grabs our attention it doesn't really reward it. Daredevil the guy may be "The Man Without Fear," but this movie doesn't have fear - or sheer wonder and marvel - enough."

Sun Paper gave it * saying it was an "Outfit for disaster" and that this movie is an "embarassment of a comic book movie" I doubt its that bad.

I doubt if the bad reviews will make much of a dent in its box office takings though. It won't do as well as Spiderman, but it should do quite well.

Tampa Tribune gave it a C+. That is basically saying it is slightly better than an average flick.

Other Ratings:

Chicago: A-
About Schimdt: A
LOTR: B+
Just Married: D
National Security: D+

Just to give an idea of how this reviewer rates. Seems pretty good to me. I'll probably just skip it in theaters or maybe use a free movie pass on it.

Oh yeah, a BLIND movie critic for a local radio station didn't care for it all that much. I thought that was pretty funny. His review site is blindsidereviews.com

SF Chronicle gave it a little guy sleeping in a chair, which I think is the equivalent of 1 star.

1 out of 4 stars from the Baltimore Sun and a fairly thorough thrashing of Affleck.

Contra Costa Times gave it a D+. I'll pass on this one (not because of the review, but she is usually really on point).

Miami Herald -- ** out of ****

Basically said that the movie is flat, with cliched dialog, and a weak, uninspiring performance by Affleck. Loved Farrell, though.

As of 3:45 PM EST, 2/14/03, Rotten Tomatoes has it at 49% (ROTTEN) -- 35 Fresh, 37 Rotten reviews.

From the critics' point of view, Daredevil looks like a disappointment... and it IS!

Crosstown paper (St. Paul Pioneer Press) also gave it 3/4 stars. And Jeff Strickler is the one reviewer in this town I least believe. Hewitt (St. Paul) and Covert (Minneapolis) are usually good, although I have disagreed with Hewitt on several occasions.

Man, the movie is really getting hammered...this may effect my BO prediction...as well as bad weather in certain parts of the country.

Steven Hunter slammed the film on the Tony Kornheiser show.

In Chicago however, Roeper gave it a hearty thumbs up and Ebert 3 of 4 stars.

I only get the Tampa Tribune sent to my house but went to their website and saw the reviewer gave it a C. Not really much better. Here is the link... http://stpetetimes.com/2003/02/13/We...s_short_.shtml

Why the interest in their review? BTW, I'm not totally basing my motive for not seeing this movie on one review. I could really care less what one newspaper reviewer thinks. It looks as though he is pretty good however.

Edit: replaced shipped with sent. I have been on the interent too much.
