Films using multi-aspect ratios/split screen

I know that Peter Greenaway has used multi-aspect ratios for Prospero's Books and The Pillow Book. For Brainstorm the screen alternates between 35 and 65mm. Has there been any other films that use this technique?

In terms of multi-angle/split screen, Mike Figgis has done this for "Timecode", briefly in "Miss Julie". In the British film AKA the screen is split in triptych. What other films are presented in this fashion?

I've never seen it, but didn't Sliding Doors use a split screen?

Geofferson 02-13-03 10:04 AM

The Andromeda Strain is the best example os split screen that comes to mind.

flixtime 02-13-03 10:16 AM

I probably should remember this with greater clarity since I just saw the movie a couple of weeks ago, but didn't City of God make some use of split-screen?

jeez, I should remember too, but I can't. Everything about the movie moved quite quickly.

Split screen has been making a bit of a come back. The Grifters uses it well. And from back in the day, there's theBoston Strangler. I watched something recently that used split screen to show a character’s actions from different perspectives—it was quite effective, but unfortunately I cannot recall the title at the moment.

Dr. Strangelove is presented in different aspect ratios, as is Able Gance’s Napoleon.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned WOODSTOCK !

For virtuoso split screen use, check out Charlie.

Edit: I can't find any info on IMDB about this movie... it's the one about the guy who was retarded and there's a medical breakthrough that allows him to become smarter, but only for a short time...

quashmonger 02-13-03 11:11 AM

Sisters, by Brian De Palma, I thought made really good use of split screen for tension and suspense.

RevLiver 02-13-03 11:22 AM

Narc, the screen splits into 4 at one point.

Dr. Strangelove uses multiple aspect ratios.

Pants 02-13-03 11:28 AM

Multi Aspect Ratios: the Horse Whisperer starts in 1.85 and changes to 2.35 when they get to Montanna(at least in the theater it did)

Split Screen: Most Brian De Palma films use split screen
Requirm for a Dream
Annie Hall
Grande Prix splits into 48 frames I believe

Some De Palma films including Dressed to Kill.

Great example. That and DePalma's Dressed to Kill both build up suspense by the use of split-screen.

Thanks, it's been years and years since I saw it and I knew there was something wrong I couldn't put my finger on.

Carrie

sundog 02-13-03 02:04 PM

Wow. DePalma sure does own the split screen category. Add Femme Fatale to his list.

jdpatri 02-13-03 02:56 PM

Time Code

...it's quartered screen though.

This scene, in addition to the ridiculously tense opening scene, cemented the fact that the director of Narc has a damned fine head on his shoulders.

I heard that The Rules of Attraction used split-screen quite effectively, also. I have not, however, seen the latter picture.

Till again.

Rypro 525 02-13-03 04:14 PM

Austin Powers 1 used it at the begining.

Mr. Salty 02-13-03 05:03 PM

"Galaxy Quest" used multiple aspect ratios. It started in 1.85:1 and switched to 2.35:1 whaen Tim Allen realized he really was in outer space.

It did?

Drexl 02-13-03 05:51 PM

Boogie Nights

Tscott 02-13-03 05:55 PM

Pillow Talk used split screen for the party-line phone conversations.

That reminds me of another one-When Harry Met Sally.

Does Fantasia 2000 count? "The Sorceror's Apprentice" is 1.37:1 while the rest of the movie is 1.85:1.

Alien Redrum 02-13-03 06:40 PM

I remember an episode of the X-Files did it.

Pretty good episode too. It was the one about the ship and there were no cuts.

Numanoid 02-13-03 07:05 PM

The very beginning of Star Trek III: The Search For Spock used several aspect ratios, if you count each frame of the slow zoom from the Spock death scene from Trek II (starts out small, then zooms into full view).

The film started out in 1.33:1 when the clip from the television show is played then going to 1.85:1 and ending up in 2.35:1 for once Tim Allen travels to space.

The DVD is presented in only 2.35:1.

Split screens: When Harry Met Sally, Snatch, Run Lola Run

Mutley Hyde 02-14-03 12:00 AM

Split screen...

Superfly

which seriously needs to be on dvd already, you dig?

Multiple angle...

Rashoman ;)

digiboy 02-14-03 10:08 AM

Narc uses some split screen effects.

Timecode is shot to video with the screen split into quarters showing 4 different cameras for practically the whole move.

Woodstock uses different AR's and split screens.

Mad Max 2 (The Road Warrior) opens in a small 1.33 type frame and then widens out.

My all time favorite for best use of split and multiple screens is the original Thomas Crown Affair (Steve McQueen/Faye Dunaway)

kian69 02-14-03 10:15 AM

Timecode, is that way the whole movie.
