Who was robbed at the 2003 Oscar nods?
Since the other Academy thread is pretty potpourri, I thought I'd take a specific slice to look at. Who was robbed this year?
The first two names that come to mind for me are Dennis Quaid and Alfred Molina. Two marvelous, virtuoso peformances that did more than support their films, they DROVE them. But both are on the outside looking in. The two biggest offenders are John C. Reilly and Christopher Walken. I didn't want to hijack the Reilly thread, I do appreciate his work, despite the fact he plays a variant on the same dumbass in everything I've seen of him. But this was not his moment. He's barely in Chicago, and next to Molina and Quaid, there's no comparison. And as a huge Walken fan, I'm left wondering what's so great about his work here? It seems to be a quite typical Walken performance. Not bad, but not really outstanding like the two men on the outside looking in. Molina and Quaid gave career best performances there.
And I know there are screwy foreign film rules, and I haven't seen 3 of the nominees, but I'd be hard pressed to think that they are superior to either Talk to Her or Y Tu Mama Tambien. Spain didn't nominate Talk to Her, and due to early release in Mexico, Y Tu Mama was ineligable(apparently, I can't see why it's exlcued otherwise) but yet it was still eligable for screenplay award. Shouldn't we base the American Acadaemy Awards on American release dates?
And in that vein, I think Ana Lopez Mercado was certainly deserving for Y Tu Mama. It was a tough category, but concievbly she could have been pushed for best supporting actress and certainly been more deserving that Latifah.
That's all I got for now, but I reserve the right to get steamed and vent.

while they were nomiated for Golden Globes:
I thought the soundtracks for "Rabbit Proof Fence" and "25th Hour" were excellent choices. Two great soundtracks shamelessly ignored.
Also the soundtrack for "Spirited Away" was beautiful

I agree that the complete snubbing of Punch Drunk Love is rediculous.
As is Peter Gabriel for Rabit Proof Fence
Biggest single omition of the year is The Kid Stays in the Picture from the documentary selections. It was my pick for best film of the year.

Please. Stop saying that Peter Jackson was "robbed." I saw the special features on the DVD: this guy is so incompotent he needed 7+ additional units to help him film. Most directors needs one, sometimes two.

Groucho is right. Moreover George Lucas deserves a special nomination for his groundbreaking technique of directing exclusively via computer command line interface.

Gere wasn't robbed, the only deserving actor in Chicago was Zeta-Jones. Punch Drunk Love was snubbed as was Robin Williams but other than that, the noms, IMHO, were fair.

Peter Jackson should get best director just for attempting to tackle something this big. Now, you want him to do everything without assistance?
He's already had to go back to NZ to reshoot alot of footage because the unit director didn't get it right.

The bottom line is the Oscars are utterly meaningless, fixed, & annoying & anyone who actually thinks the nominations & awards are actually picked for the people that deserve them are delusional.
