"long" movies that don't feel long?

The only one I can think of is Pulp Fiction. The dialogue is so good, and the movie is so enjoyable that it didn't feel like 2 1/2 hours.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

kian69 02-06-03 04:21 PM

It's not long to begin with, but everytime I watch Army of Darkness I feel, like I've only seen a 30minute show, it feels sooooo short.

Rizor 02-06-03 04:21 PM

Lord of the Rings and Magnolia.

La Belle Noiseuse

1991 French film, clocks in at just about 4 hours. About an artist who lacks inspiration, and finds it in a beautiful house guest (a perfunctory explanation).

Not much in the way of action, but the filmmaker (whose name eludes me) casts a spell over the proceedings that makes it a captivating experience. Oh, and the fact that Emmanuelle Beart is naked for about 3/4 of the movie doesn't hurt matters, either.

I hope you're kidding, because I was nodding off by the end of both Potter movies, and I normally don't mind long movies.

Nope. I loved both movies and they flew by for me.

I agree, when I saw Pulp Fiction in the theatre, time FLEW by for me, I was so engrossed in it. My friend who saw it with me, didn't like it as much, and said it felt long to him.

OTOH, as good as the LOTR films are, they definitely feel like 3 hours to me, but those films are supposed to feel epic.

verges on mature

Star Wars(es)
Godfather(s)
Band of Brothers on the whole didn't seem
like the 10 hour epic it was...

bothanspy 02-06-03 05:51 PM

I never find Braveheart long.

shizawn 02-06-03 05:53 PM

Despite its nearly 3 and a half hour running time, the Director's Cut of Das Boot flies by for me.

If I didn't have to flip the DVD over halfway through it would go by even faster.

Dr. DVD 02-06-03 06:14 PM

I always felt that JFK and the LOTR films flew by in no time.

Yeah, those parts never seemed to drag...

The Last Temptation of Christ didn't feel long. Neither did Werckmeister Harmonies.

reubs82 02-06-03 06:41 PM

I'm gonna say Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers...both seemed to go pretty quickly for me.

Goat3001 02-06-03 06:44 PM

Another for Pulp Fiction.

Also, Almost Famous

Frank TJ Mackey 02-06-03 07:03 PM

brombie 02-06-03 07:08 PM

City of God - 135 minutes running time and you should bring a portable potty so you don't miss a thing going to the restroom. I want to see the director's cut version that's supposed to be 3 hours 20 minutes. It's the only movie that has a chance against LOTR1 extended cut.

Mountain Biker 02-06-03 07:11 PM

Heat
Goodfellas
Casino

fumanstan 02-06-03 07:41 PM

Pulp Fiction and The Two Towers. Fellowship felt like 4 hours to me, but the Two Towers zipped right on

mookyman 02-06-03 09:41 PM

It's like Ebert said - no good movie is too long, and no bad movie is too short.

Some movies I love that exceed 3 hours:

Lawrence of Arabia
The Godfather Part II
Magnolia
The Fellowship of the Ring
Casino
JFK and Nixon
Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet

wordtoyamotha 02-06-03 11:04 PM

Godfather(s)
Lord of the Rings

Hmm, I'd have to agree with James Kilpatrick, whom I remember writing in a column something like: "The first hour seemed like two hours, the second hour seemed like four and the last forty minutes went until next Tuesday."

ShaqKob 02-06-03 11:24 PM
