to Dancer in the Dark (actually made me cry at the end, but I'll never admit it!)

In addition to what's already been mentioned:

Heavenly Creatures
Jules and Jim
Titus

Just seeing the TV adds for it is sad.

American History X, definitely. When I watched it the first time I actually had to leave the room at certain parts because it was getting me so upset.

Braveheart is the best movie ever, but it sends chills through my body when Mel yells out "freedom." I always tear up at that part.

Boys Don't Cry was pretty depressing, along with Elephant Man.

And what was the name of the movie about the Apocalypse that was in black & white except for the little girl that has a red coat? Now THAT was a depressing movie.

Rudy depressed the hell out of me. I was having a bad day and wanted to watch an inspirational film. Rudy was a big downer for me. Maybe it was just the mood I was in.

The War Zone and Affliction both left me drained after watching them.

Cast Away

I was already depressed when I saw that film, and well,"Misery Loves Company", so I ended up enjoying this film thoroughly. So sad, and while people called it unrealistic, I thought the ending was one of the most realistic parts in any film. . .

A little-known classic that deserves more attention:

Editorial Reviews
Amzon.com essential video

This Ivan Passer movie--a marvel of dark, brooding cinema--almost didn't make it into theaters. The film was nearly dumped by its studio because its pessimistic story seemed too downbeat. Which, in fact, is part of the appeal: the way it gets to the heart of a group of people who have given up, but then find something that motivates them to go on. In this case, it's greed: Cutter (Jeff Bridges), a burnt-out gigolo, and his pal Bone (John Heard), a disfigured Vietnam veteran, get involved in a plot involving corruption and murder. Bone has proof that a powerful businessman is behind the killing and wants to be paid off to keep quiet; instead he buys them more trouble than he can imagine. Bridges, as always, is superb--and Heard is downright scary. --Marshall Fine

A Simple Plan - One of my favorite films, but so damn bleak and depressing that I don't watch it often.

I thought The Pledge was also pretty depressing.

I won't repeat some of the other great picks so I'll offer:

The Last American Virgin. It really depressed me with the ending.
