Good one... That movie is infuriating as well, because the character(s) make you so mad. Or at least they made me mad.

Through a Glass, Darkly is pretty grim, but then most of Bergman's films aren't filled with joy.

Sophies Choice.
A TV movie I saw about Suicide called Silence of the Heart. It was about a kid Chad Lowe who drove his car off a cliff because he wasnt doing good in school and how it impacted his family and friends. Very good but...depressing.

I would have put Requiem and Platoon too.

Some of the most depressing films I've seen:

Come and See
Ladybird, Ladybird
Grave of the Fireflies

i'm sure I can think of more, but right now my brain is fried.

never released on DVD, or VHS for that matter, "The Pointsman" is a painfully sad film. .

French? Ahem...

Wings of Desire aka Der Himmel Uber Berlin is a very German film, directed by Wim Wenders...

It's also extremely uplifting. Just about the most moving and uplifting film ever made, as far as that goes.

as a kid I found "Time Bandits" to be really depressing, the movie just kind of ends with very little resolution or conclusiveness for the film's lead character.
Spoiler:
Of course that was the point but as a child viewing the film, it was quite upsetting and distressing that Kevin was literally abandoned at the end of the movie by all his friends and family.
