Chicago Limited release??

Sorry if this has been discussed..
but why is a big movie like Chicago in limited release?
I live in North Jersey and have to travel to see it.
I have 5 theaters within 20 miles and its not playing at any of them...
After the one theater..only other places to see it is in NYC...

Any ideas???

The release strategy for Chicago here in the sticks is really, really ticking me off. In a moderate market that usually has a couple of independent or small films playing at a time, Chicago is only playing Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 7 PM ... and this is for two different theaters/chains. I don't like being forced to pay full price for movies ... so I guess I won't. What is the purpose of this kind of release ... word of mouth?

I have no idea but I too had to travel out of town to see it two weeks ago.

I'm pretty sure the strategy is to keep it in limited release until the Oscar nominations come out, then flood the market with a "Nominated for X Academy Awards" campaign.

There was an article in today's L.A. Times about what Miramax is doing with Chicago. Basically, since this movie has all the buzz going for it right now, Miramax is doing these 3-day showings to prop up their under-performing titles: Gangs of New York and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

Unfortunately for Chicago (and its boxoffice numbers and profit participants), the receipts from these so-called "Sneak Previews" are being credited to the movie it is paired with (which probably makes Martin Scorcese and George Clooney happy).

What's striking is that Miramax is sneaking "Chicago" in some of the same cities where it has already opened. While sneaking is a normal part of movie marketing, it is unusual when a film has already opened in other theaters in the same city and to stretch it over three days.

It is also not done when the film has already achieved such a high profile. The critically acclaimed "Chicago" has won the Golden Globe for best picture/musical or comedy. This weekend, the musical, which has taken in more than $40 million, will "officially" be in about 620 theaters and will expand to more than 1,800 play dates Feb. 7.
