What movie will tops this years box office

So what movie will tops this years box office

Simpson Purist 01-19-03 03:48 PM

It's gonna be Return of the King.

bsktballDude1 01-19-03 05:29 PM

I'll say The Return of the King as well, but you never know.... I didn't think that Spider-Man would be the number 1 movie last year.

johnglass 01-19-03 07:36 PM

I think if Matrix 2 is worth the hype, then part 3 could be the big moneymaker this year. The studio is taking a big chance releasing it so close to two- it could backfire on them by not allowing the anticipation to build up over enough time. But then again, this has never been done, so they may be able to ride the excitement of part 2.

And what is X2? The prequel to xXx? :D

Shamu 01-19-03 07:47 PM

Probably X-Men 2

matome 01-19-03 08:25 PM

If the Matrix 2 wasn't rated R, I think it would be a shoo-in. Since it's not I'll have to go with LOTR.

clemente 01-19-03 09:33 PM

Kill Bill??

That's a shot in the dark....I'm guessing the gross of QT's last three movie won't touch the gross of the 5 movies on that list so unless there's a QT base explosion, I don't see it.

I think T3 has a chance to crack that list though.
Matrix 2 and 3 will be hindered BO wise by an R rating.

ROTK makes the most sense to me.

darkside 01-19-03 10:50 PM

Return of the King is probably a lock. It will be tough for any other film to break 300 million and Return of the King is a sure thing for at least 300 million.

Goat3001 01-19-03 11:46 PM

I got a question:

ROTK will be released in the last weeks of December, so technically it only has 2 or so weeks to be number one at the box office to make it before 2003 is over right? Or is it the movies complete run including the money that comes in in 2004?

csim 01-20-03 12:13 AM

The movies that are released in 2003

kian69 01-20-03 01:00 AM

IF The Matrix gets a PG rating then it has a good shot at the top, if not Return of the Ring will have a huge edge. But neverthless both Matrix movies should in theory, according the huge hype, be not too too far to the top.

If The Matrix comes out with a PG-13, you're going to see a lot of disappointed people, probably not enough to make a serious BO dent as other will fill the void....but that would suck.

Deftones 01-20-03 08:21 PM

I say Hulk. it will capitalize on the superhero craze just like Spiderman did. The Matrix 2 and 3 won't top the lists simply b/c it's an 'R' flick. LOTR is probably the safest bet, though.

I'll be one of them.LOTR is definitely going to rule this year, unless it gets pushed back a couple of days and opens in January.:D

I beg to differ. Remember Back to the Future parts 2 and 3?

I would say ROTK as well, although personally, Kill Bill is the one I'm most interested in.

roger_d 01-21-03 09:15 AM

Matrix 3 gets a vote from me.

soxrule 01-21-03 05:48 PM

Freddy v.s. Jason hahahaha

RayChuang 01-21-03 10:24 PM

Return of the King will be #1....

...But as a 2003 calendar year winner, its impact won't come until the first few months of 2004 after the movie has been in wide release for that period.

In short, I think X2 will probably be close to #1 (if they market it correctly), but the two Matrix sequels will probably make around US$250 million max for each movie due to the very likely chance the R rating will limit the audience for the movie.

Well you’re both right, it just depends on how you look at it. The two Back To The Future sequels were both shot simultaneously as well, and were released only six months apart, HOWEVER it wasn’t in the same calendar year.

Return of the King!

just a note about the BACK TO BACK release patterns, Universal did it twice... Back to the Future 2 and 3 as mentioned (sure it was split up year wise due to time frame, but it was about the same month frame as matrix) and same with CHILD'S PLAY 2 and CHILD'S PLAY 3. They were also shot back to back and released less than a year apart... but I think MATRIX stands a good chance to being the biggest movie of the year...

despite the R rating, a lot of parents know their kids have seen the first one, so they might as well see the rest.... I think it will do some big bank, but hope that LOTR kicks it's butt.....

No Mention of THE CAT IN THE HAT yet?? Is everyone forgetting how great THE GRINCH did in the same time frame??
