Chicago vs. Gangs of New York: which will Miramax push for Oscars?
As many of you who follow the Oscars in recent years know, Miramax always selects at least one film to give a major push and campaign to for awards.
This year Miramax has two with potential: Gangs and Chicago. While Gangs looked like the best chance initially, Chicago is showing amazing strength in limited release. If I were at Miramax, I would push Chicago, but that's just me. |
.... and to make your question even more difficult, don't forget that they shared distribution with Paramount for The Hours as well. ;)
Gangs was such as disappointment (to me), they'd be better off with Chicago IMHO. |
Personally I hope they push GONY. I'm pulling for Scorcese to pick up some hardware this year.

I would love for Marty to get some hardware this year, but the academy seems so swayed by receipts that I doubt it has a chance at this strage. It needs major wins at the Globes and major noms for Oscar.

Originally posted by Dr. DVD I would love for Marty to get some hardware this year.... But back on topic..... in general CHICAGO is getting the buzz right now, and doing extremely well in limited release, so Miramax will probably push in that direction. |
I think they will push Chicago more, but both will be getting lots of Oscar push. I think Miramax would rather push both and double their chances, rather than just focus solely on one!

They'll push Daniel Day Lewis and that's it. And they'd be right to do so because GONY was easily the worst film of Scorsese's career. I guess the rest of the push will go behind Chicago even though it's a tenth rate retread of Cabaret.
|
I wish I still my subscription to Daily Variety so I could tell you. God, when I had that thing, there were hundreads and hundreads of ads for the Cider House Rules and I can understand why the damn thing got nominated. I think Chicago will get the push, more so and Gangs of New York for Set Design, costumes, and for Daniel Day Lewis. The Hours will more likely just be pushed for Nicole Kidman's performance and maybe adapted screenplay.
|
Considering the kind of response Chicago has been getting, it doesn't need much of a push, it will get nominations anyway. Gangs, on the other hand, needs a push to get nominated, and even then I don't think it has a real chance of winning.
|
i agree with pants...i think they'll push for DDL/best actor and MAYBE martin for director but aside from that i think they'll really push for chicago. it's their safest bet right now, especially after GONY didnt do well.

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.
Well at least for Sam Rockwell. Underrated. |
they'll push both of them but CHICAGO probably more.
i don't think Scorsese deserves anything for Gangs of New York. it's a decent movie that looks great but not worthy of an Oscar. |
Gangs was better than Chicago, but Chicago will probably get more of a push.
Just a gut feeling... they're reviving the musical too :\ |
Both of them?
