The Ring - Question

I just happened to watch this movie months after it came out. Here's a part of the movie I don't understand and I'm sure someone will have an explanation.

Btw, this is the horror/scary movie "The Ring" aka Ringu remake.

Q: How did Samara kill the other kids in the car accident since we know how she kills the the first girl and the last guy. Seeing they are highschool kids, I don't think they have state of the art entertainment equiment in their car for Samara to *appear*. So, how did she reveal herself at 10pm??

Hopefully this doesn't give away the plot to someone who hasn't watch the movie.

I have to imagine that they watched the tape, a week later she shows up, they run to the car and drive off. Somewhere on the road she catches up to them and kills them.

Or, perhaps she doesn't necessarily need a media device at all and can appear however she chooses.

I think it was pretty well established that she had the ability to send "images" (expose film, video tape, and project them into people's and animal's minds). I figure she sent them a vision that caused the accident at high speeds.

I believe the "official" explanation is that she can use any reflective surface, in this case the windshield of the car.

Is that from the Japanese version? I don't remember that being mentioned in the US film.

Groucho 01-06-03 02:20 PM

It wasn't in the film, I read it some interview/article somewhere.

If I remember correctly, in the Asian version the two teens in the car are shown dead. Their faces are contorted in fear like the other victims.

Thanks for the explanation. As I haven't watch the original Japanese version, I was going by the American version. Two scenes of death involved the *media* device as the medium. I just found it as odd that the kids in the car could have been killed. Maybe she did chased after them afterall which I find not to be a good explanation.

If she indeed can project images, why bother showing up in the first place?

How did the actual video get made in the first place? I'm assuming Samara made it but?

When they recorded the football game it was over the well. I think.

kantonburg 03-05-03 10:42 PM

Oh so the actual curse didn't start till the kids were in the cabin?

I was assuming that the father knew of this tape since he acted funny when she asked him if he knew what this was and he said "Where did you get that?"

Dudikoff 03-05-03 10:44 PM

I think that Samara can be picked up on FM radio.

RichC2 03-05-03 10:45 PM

I always thought she was in their head. I mean that seemed to be her main talent - the ability to burn images into one's head.

That kind of explains a few other things when I think about it. But who knows, I could be on crack for all you know.

That's really the whole mystery of the film. There are some clues that would suggest that nobody made it. Remember the part with the straight-on shot of the mirror, yet no camera reflection. Also, the scrambled video code suggests that there was no source; that the video just is. Then there's the other odd stuff, such as the fly, that makes you think that the video is something beyond our earthly comprehension.

I think the original was made while she was in the hospital. The father destroyed the previous one. When the teens recorded the football game, it started all over.

This is basically what I got from the movie.

The cabin was built over the well. The cabin owner had a video collection he lent out to guests, but it wasn't common for people to record things while they were staying there.

But the teenagers were different. The boys wanted to watch a football game, while the girls wanted to go out to dinner or something (I can't remember exactly). When they got back to the cabin and tried to watch the game, there was nothing but static and the images from Samara's disturbed little mind.

One would have to assume that VCRs are as prone to interference from the netherworld as they are from CB radios.

If that were the case how did she get footage of the house and whatnot. I agree the video just is and was created while they tried taping the football game.

Weird stuff. I guess thats what makes it interesting.

Jackskeleton 03-05-03 11:38 PM

Which teenager now a days doesn't have a PS1 hooked up to the Mounted t.v. head rest in their car now a days? :p

Trigger 03-06-03 12:06 AM

The original left fewer questions IMO - I think the remake went out of its way to explain things better to the stupid american audience and in doing so, they created more questions and plot holes.

I'll have to watch more closely when I watch my shiny new DVD this weekend, but I thought all of the images from the video were from Samara's memories, what she saw through her eyes, or at least from her mind.

DeputyDave 03-06-03 02:17 AM

My only question is if the tape that was made in the cabin by the four students was the first tape, how did the “urban legend” start? How did the friend of the first victim know about the story? If she had just heard from other friends about those four, how did she (and the victims) know they were going to die in seven days? I mean, they watch a freaky video, the phone rings, and some chick says, “seven days.” How did they know it meant they would DIE in seven days if they hadn’t heard about the story before?
