I guess I will go w/ The Sound of Music, but that would probably tie w/ Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - Chitty was bad motherf***er.

I totally agree with that--it ruins the whole movie for me.

What, none of the Astaire and Rogers or the great Freed unit films (other than Singin' In the Rain)?

My favorite is Swing Time.

Cabaret

A musical where the music and choreography, brilliant as they were, weren't even necessarily the best parts of the film.

Definitely West Side Story for me.

On a related note, it is being released on DVD in April with Natalie Wood's original singing! Can't wait for that.

Honk!

I marked Sound Of Music but Music Man is probably my favorite. Oliver at least deserves honorable mention in the poll

No Astaire and Rogers. No Busby Berkely. No "Wizard of Oz." No "Mary Poppins." No "1776." No "Meet Me in St. Louis." No "An American in Paris." No "Bandwagon." No "Oliver." No "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers." No "Beauty and the Beast," "Little Mermaid," "Alladin," "Lion King," or nameless other Disney animated fare. All better than all but two films on the list (the first two).

Don't get me wrong...I like all of the films on the list ("Chicago" I have yet to see) but they are hardly the cream of the movie musical crop.

This poll needs to be rebuilt.

BTW, I agree regarding "My Fair Lady." Higgins should get his own d*mn slippers!

And god said - let there be LIPS!

Dude, its all about the Rocky Horror for me - although Wonka comes in a very close second (and would be the one on the list I'd go with if I had to pick from those 9).

I voted Singin' in the Rain. But my favorite musicals are Wizard of Oz, It's Always Fair Weather, Top Hat, and Footlight Parade. Cabaret also rules. Those poll choices suck.

you want me to delete this one, and start another one of 9 "essential musicals", and one be "other"
I'm thinking about putting
Singin in the Rain
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Jesus Christ Superstar
Wizard of Oz
Willy Wonka and the Chacolote factory
Oliver
Grease
Marry Poppins
A Disney animated feature
What... you forgot..
Is that list alright.

No question - Dancer in the Dark!!! But Cabaret, Singin' in the Rain, The Sound of Music, and of course, South Park: BL&U are all great!

I have to admit though that I haven't seen the majority of the films mentioned in the thread.

You're not going to be able to please everyone with a ten-selection poll. If you're really interested in results, do three or four separate ones (not all at the same time), separating by decade.

Look, the era of classic musicals was over by 1960. Why not start there and work backward.

So far, still The Sound of Music, in my opinion.
