^ too bad the dvd's a barebones super-bit. Oh yeah, I need dts for a mostly dialogue driven film.

How great would a commentary be from the real McKee, or Orleans, or the guy Chris Cooper played? Or extras that totally jibe with the whole concept of the film as a cynical commentary on the development of hollywood films - but no, we get dts - wohooo!!!

Re: Adaptation ending (MAJOR SPOILERS)

I like this film more every time I see it.

Watched it again last night and it was such a pleasure to watch.

Re: Adaptation ending (MAJOR SPOILERS)

I absolutely hated Being John Malkovich so I avoided this one. Is it more of the same as I assumed or might I actually find this one enjoyable?

It's nothing like BJM, but I'm going to guess you wouldn't like it.

Re: Adaptation ending (MAJOR SPOILERS)

Chris Cooper's line about ice age fossils in which he says "collected the shit out of 'em" never fails to make me laugh.

Glad he got an Oscar for this role.

This was a nice flash from the past. For what it's worth, I still think Adaptation is one of the best films of the decade.

I can only speak for myself but I absolutely hated Being John Malkovich too, I blind bought it, watched it once and traded it away the next day.

That being said, I truly loved Adaptation. I haven't seen it since it was first released on DVD but I remember really thinking it was great.

"Look, I'll tell you a story, all right? I once fell deeply, you know, profoundly in love with tropical fish. Had 60 goddamn fish tanks in my house. I skin dived to find just the right ones. Anisotremus virginicus, Holdacanthus ciliaris, Chaetodon capistratus. You name it. Then one day I say, "fuck fish". I renounce fish. I vow never to set foot in that ocean again. That's how much "fuck fish". "

I love it.

Re: Adaptation ending (MAJOR SPOILERS)

One of the more memorably unique movies of the decade, that's for damn sure.

Re: Adaptation ending (MAJOR SPOILERS)

Maybe the funniest thing is that some people ripped off Donald's screenplay!

- First is one that I have not heard anyone talk about is there is a lmost a homage to a sam sheppard play (starring John Malkovich and Gary Sinese) called "True West" with regards to Donald and Charlie and there relationship, there are lines and a few concepts that are clearly poached from these play.

- next is with the shift between 2-3 acts, it can be seen as Charlie has ended his movie as Susan has also ended her storyonly to be told that he cant end the movie like this and then we have Donald's Ending Or hollywoods ending.

- Last is the concept I got from the book was about disapointment, Susan not ever seeing the flower, the lack of something for her to truly love and feel pasionetly about. What Kaufman has done with this ending is given you a feeling of disapointment or a feeling of being cheated out of a proper ending. this feeling disapointment I feel he wants the viewer to feel. Like Susan you were also cheated out of a good ending.

Well then again who knows but I truly loved the movie.

Matt
Excellent! And to join in the conversation, Ebert was right and the naysayers don't get it.

Perhaps they're not aware that the original book is more about Susan Orlean and her struggles and demons and ultimate failure to accomplish her goal with the book (but in the end making it a richer book than it would have been had she succeeded) than it is about the orchid guy... and this adaptation of her book is more about the screenwriter's struggles and demons and ultimate failure to adapt Orleans book (but in the end making it a richer film than it would have been had he properly adapted the book)....

Books could be written on the genius behind this film's conception, but suffice it to say, it's fucking brilliant.
