Star Wars ep 2: Count Dooku's Sword Style

My roommate and I have been wondering about this since May. Is Count Dooku's lightsaber design or even his fighting stance with it based on any paticular real sword ir swordplay?

I got his lightsaber toy and it's just.. strange.. :D

His lightsaber reminds me of the gunblade from FFVIII.

There are many different foil and epee grips for real fencing so I don't see Count Dooku's sabre as anything extraordinary.

Karnblack, thanks!! I figured it was some style of fencing.. I know a couple of guys who claimed they made his ligthsaber that way just "to look cool"..

Thanks!

According to the script, Dooku used the "old style" fencing method.

Chris Lee also has some fencing ability I do belive, so that's probably where it's from.

Hasn't Lee done more on-screen sword fights than any other actor?

In the book it said Dooku used his weapon to thrust rather than the traditional slashing method that lightsabres are normally used in.

Q&A Doug Chiang

What is the significance of Count Dooku's curved lightsaber handle?
We wanted to create something unique for Dooku and thought that a curved lightsaber would reflect an earlier time,_ as if Count Dooku was from the "old school" of training and thought. The curved handle reflected that sensibility and also set him apart from the other Jedi.

The shape of Dooku's lightsaber, with its arabesque curved handle, came out of earlier exploration of Sith villains. Art Department Assistant Roel Robles brought in a number of Filipino swords, knives and spears to provide inspiration for weapon-shapes. One particular sword, a barong, had a curved handle that provided a firmer grip for the combatant.
