Best Film of 1960 (ongoing survey)

A quick note:
  • Some people are now saying it's before their time, so they haven't seen enough to vote... If you've seen even one film that you really liked from the year, and thus you consider it the best you've seen (even if it's the only one you've seen), go ahead and vote. Heck, I was born in '82, so yeah, it's before my time too, but I've still got a favorite from most years back at least through the 70s, even if I've just seen 2 or 3 from the year.

I know we've got polls like this all the time around here, but I figure this one will be a little more comprehensive and perhaps even informative.

This thread will be for your pick for best film released during 1960 (think Oscar considerations for what's eligible). I'm not making it a poll because whether you like it or not, that would influence some people's choice.

Results will be posted in this thread, and all subsequent threads for each year, and they will be ongoing... so you can still vote here even weeks after other year's polls have begun.

Please start your post with your #1 film from 1960 (try to limit it to one - after all, that's the point - two at the most (I'll split the vote)), and yes, discussions are more than welcome!

Although to me it's Hitchcock's fourth best work, it's still certainly a masterpiece of American cinema...

1) Psycho - 10/10
2) Peeping Tom - 8/10

And, unfortunately, that's all I've seen from 1960. I feel very, very ashamed. It's also pretty odd, since Horror is about my least favorite genre, but '60 was a banner year for it.

Oscar for Best Picture:
The Apartment *WINNER
The Alamo
Elmer Gantry
Sons and Lovers
The Sundowners

Other notables:
Spartacus, The Magnificent Seven, La Dolce Vita, The Time Machine, Breathless, Inherit the Wind, Ocean's Eleven, The Little Shop of Horrors, Shoot the Piano Player, Purple Noon, Swiss Family Robinson, Village of the Damned...

Man, I desperately need to see so many of these!!!!

Ocean's Eleven ... that's right, dammit ... Ocean's Eleven. Don't look at me that way ... you all voted Empire over Raging Bull and The Shining ... and Jedi over Scarface, so I figure anything goes.

It's all a state of mind.
Whether or not you'll fine.
That place down there or Heaven.
In the meantime.
Eee-oh Eee-o-oh ...
Eee-oh Eleven.

1960 beats the pants off 1961... There are at least 3 or 4 movies I'd choose over my selection for 1961.

What was your 1961 selection?

I thought both Psycho & Spartacus were dreck.

I agree that Yojimbo was good, but not great. I actually thought the Eastwood remake was better.

1961 was definitely a weak year.

I liked The Hustler, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and Judgement at Nuremburg, and The Commancheros was enjoyable, but none of them are in the top 100. Hate West Side Story.

I loved Psycho but i thought Peeping Tom was a much better movie.
you can't forget Mario Bava's "Mask of Satan"(or Black Sunday)

This is tough, but I have to go with

THE APARTMENT

I love this movie and watch it at least 3 times a year. The Magnificent Seven, Psycho and Spartacus are all superb films, but not ones that I HAVE to watch every year.

Not a big fan of Spartacus, and while Psycho is interesting, it's been so over-analyzed and acclaimed that I'm left feeling just so-so with the actual film. So my choice is one that won't win, and I'll most likely be the only one who votes for it, but....Pollyanna.

The Magnificent Seven and Swiss Family Robinson are good ones, too.

Wow...Can't believe it's even a contest...

PSYCHO

Maybe it's not a film you watch over and over, but it had such an impact on filmaking for years to come. I can't think of a film that manipulated the audience as much as this one did. I mean
Spoiler:
To get the audience concerned that the car wouldn't sink all the way when Norman got rid of the evidence is genius! That's the main character in that car trunk! We're supposed to care for her! But our emotions shift so easily to Norman. "Uh-Oh...it's not sinking..what's he gonna do!!!" We were made to care for this new character.

Let's get the votes for Psycho up folks! :-)
