"Maid" beats "Star Trek" at box-office this weekend
According to boxofficemojo.com, "Maid in Manhattan" beat "Star Trek: Nemesis" at the box-office by about a million dollars. "Maid" did 19 million and "Nemesis", 18.7. I'm kind of surprised that "Nemesis" opened so weak. Unless word of mouth keeps this one afloat, it will drop the usual 30-40% next week. And will top off around 50-60 million. Pretty bad for a "Trek" film. Back to "Maid in Manhattan". This makes me ill. I'm so sick of J-Ho. AND Ben Affleck. I wish both of them would take a trip to the Grand Canyon like Thelma and Louise.

Well, the numbers are just a prediction. The real numbers will come out Monday or Tuesday. Some times Studios inflate their numbers so they can run ads saying #1 movie or comedy in the nation...
I have #1 and #2 flipped many times when they are that close. And I have seen a #1 film be highly over stated to the point where it makes the studio look like a joke.
The Saturday date crowd will be the ones who make ST or MiM #1.

Yeah, I know these are just "guestimates" at this time. Still, the numbers are pretty close. And, aren't you surprised "Nemesis" did so poorly? Thought there were more Trekkies out there

I'm not surprised that JLo outdrew Trek... but I am stunned and shocked at Drumlines performance... I didn't think anyone actually wanted to see this movie...myself included, and am quite surprised it opened so well... Poor Rob Schneider...Hot Chicks opening is quite disappointing...hopefully, his next flick, which features him as a Stapler, will do better...

I think holiday shopping played a major role in Trek's lackluster performance. Sad, because it is a good Trek movie. Looks like a a lot of Trekkies hooked up since the last one came out.

I'll tell you, I just came back from a Sunday matinee of Nemesis at a big multiplex (where it was only playing in one theater) and at 1:15pm the theater was only half-full.
I have a feeling the movie's going to flop bigtime. Not a bad film tho.

In hindsight, they really should've tried to release ST X at a different time of year. Feb 2003 would've been good maybe. Between LOTR, Bond, Potter etc. there's a lot of competition right now. Oh well, in the end box office doesn't affect how much I like a movie or not. Like others have said, it's a great Trek film, and I'll be sure to buy the DVD when it comes out (hopefully with some of those deleted scenes I've heard about).

now besides the fact that i am furious that j-ho's movie was successful, what concerns me more is this...
what the hell?
J. Lo "Maid" Tidy Sum
by Bridget Byrne
Dec 15, 2002, 1:40 PM PT
J. Lo made it, despite competition from enterprising space travelers , a lot of rat-a-tat-tatting, and even another "hot chick."
Over a weekend which saw four new releases heading up the top 10 list, Maid in Manhattan, starring Jennifer Lopez as a gorgeous hotel cleaner, was No. 1, sweeping up an estimated $19 million.
But that tidy sum was a mere dust speck ahead of the $18.7 million estimated to have been taken in by Star Trek: Nemesis.
The modern Cinderella story, which couples pretty maid Lopez with rich politico Ralph Fiennes, attracted a predominately female audience. It is the best ever opener for the super star singer-actress, beating the sci-fi thriller The Cell's $17.5 million in 2000.
However the PG-13 Sony release did not earn the highest per screen average. It's $6,695 at 2,838 sites was slightly lower than the $6,916 at 2,711 sites for the 10th Star Trek movie.
The latest voyage in the history of the Enterprise crew, headed up by Patrick Stewart's Captain Picard facing down his evil clone, beamed up less Trekkies than usual. Men over 25 made up the majority checking out the PG-13 Paramount release, the weakest opener in the 35 year old franchise since Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country debuted with $18.1 million in 1991.
Third place Drumline actually had a better average - $7,119 at just 1,833 sites - than the two top movies. Fox's PG-13 rated upbeat marching band tale, starring Nick Cannon as a hip-hop drummer, scored an excellent, above expectations, $13 million.
James Bond has coupled with a lot of hot chicks, but in his wildest dreams the suave spy can't have imagined he'd be tangled up with Rob Schneider. But with Die Another Day dropping 42 percent out of first place in its fourth week the 007 adventure found itself locked in a fourth place tie with The Hot Chick, Schneider's crass PG-13 rated sexual switcheroo farce from Disney. Both films earned an estimated $7.5 million. However the 20th Bond movie could counter this ugly moment with the good news that it reached an overall $131.5 million, the highest gross ever in the 40-year-old franchise.
In limited release, New Line's R rated satirical drama About Schmidt, which has already earned one best actor award for Jack Nicholson's uncharacteristically suppressed performance as the low-watt retiree, opened at six theaters, with a $47,167 average for $283,000.
MGM/UA's PG rated Evelyn, in which Pierce Brosnan plays against his Bond image as a pub-loving Irish dad fighting for the right to raise his kids, debuted at 15 sites with a $4,800 average for $72,000.
The debut of this clutch of new films boosted overall box-office 32 percent over last weekend's lackluster gross. The top 12 movies took in an estimated $90.5 million, which was 2.9 percent higher than this time last year.
Exhibitor Relations Inc. estimated the top 10 as follows. Final figures are due Monday.

Craptastic! Equilibrium only made $253,000 for a total of more than $1 million in 10 days. I guess this will attract more audiences when it comes out on video, ala Boondock Saints.
