about 'about schmidt'

Just came back from seeing one of the, if not the best, pictures of the year, about schmidt.

I loved citizen ruth and election, payne is a terrific director and writer and he really has pulled off something with 3 films that are even better then the one that proceeded it.

Nicholson is amazing, he is actually playing a character, and he does it to perfection. This is the best performance by an actor of the year. We really sympathize with this man and get into his head. Nicholson really lets down any guards he might have had in the past and bares the soul of the character. You never feel that he is performing, he is always nature and real and yet he is always captivating. Man this guy rules.

It's a comedy and it's sad, and payne really makes the two things mesh well together. He grounds everything in reality and satirizes things at the same time. I love payne's vision of the midwest. He uses details very well.

This is the best use of voice over narration i've seen in a film in a long time, he made great use of it in election, and even better se of it here.

In the end its a pretty simple film in the terms of what it has to say mostly because payne doesn't preach or talk down to the audience.

The things you want to change sometimes never do, and the effect you have on your life and others doesn't necessarily have the impact you want it to.
And almost everyone experiences a time when you realize that you haven't really appreciated something or someone until it was either gone, or too late.

I saw this last night, I enjoyed the movie, I don't think its the best picture of the year, but it is an enjoyable movie. I do believe Jack should get nominated for his performance, because it was so unlike his normal performances.

Yes! Omaha gets props!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am looking forward to seeing it as it looks good and was filmed in my hometown. On a side note my mom got a chat to meet Jack N. while he was in town filming.

caiman 12-14-02 07:13 PM

Does Kathy Bates really have a nude scene? *shudder*

tywebb1976 12-14-02 10:02 PM

yes, kathy bates is naked. ugghhhhhh..

Damn this was an excellent film. Saw it tonight in a sold out theatre.

Jack Nicholson is better than ever. If you are looking for the wit of Election you most definitely find it here, but the two films are nothing alike. Election had a lot of scathing humor, this film has hidden humor that I love.

The crowd I saw it with loved the film. We were all very into it.
I know this because of the rampant laughter throughout and a few unexpected tears.

One of the most refreshing films I have seen forever.

I could not stop laughing each time Schmidt started to write a letter, and the ending was very bittersweet.

Kathy Bates: please keep your clothes on. Jack: the same for you. :)

Go out and see this.

I'll be seeing this one tomorrow - I'll post my thoughts then. Can't wait! :)

I didn't think ABOUT SCHMIDT was as good as I expected it to be. I'd been looking forward to it since early last year.

Jack Nicholson was great.

I thought the pacing was a little slow and a few minutes here and there should've been trimmed.

That being said, i bet it gets better with more viewings.
I laughed a little bit and especially when he would write letters and I almost cried near the end.

The only thing about Nicholson's performance that I thought was fake was his walk. He just looked like he was trying soooo hard to be this character physically as well.

But that's just being nitpicky.

i give it *** out of **** stars

I thought ELECTION was a better movie and much funnier.
SCHMIDT is deeper though and is about midlife to late life which we don't get to see on screen all that often.

I tried getting in the movie with my brother, who is 18, but they wouldn't let us in, apparently both of us need to be over 17. I wanted to see this movie so bad too, looks very funny and superbly acted. . .argh.

When my friends and I were driving home, they also said it could have been trimmed down a bit.

They spouted off a few scenes that could have been trimmed:

they were all in agreement that this scene should have been cut:
Spoiler:
the scene with the couple in the winni-park

but I thought the scene was perfect because:
Spoiler:
it effectively went with the former scenes to show just how lonely Schmidt was in life, and I think it could also go back to the affair his wife had 20 or 30 years ago. my g/f thought they were robbers

His walk didn't bother me, because when I learned about Schmidt through his letters to N-du-gu , the walk worked for me: as did his whole persona.

I loved Election (it is even in my collection), but I loved it in completely different ways.

I will definitely see this film again. Jack happens to be my favorite American actor.

BTW, this movie had some of the shittiest trailers before it; the only good one being Anger Management which I had already seen.

And to anyone who says that Jack plays himself over and over. See this film.

This was a terrific movie. I loved it. I really hope it makes money to show Hollywood that quality fare can make cash. I think it is easily one of the best flicks of the year and there is one word that can sum up why this movie is so excellent: NICHOLSON. Sure, it has a great script and is steadily directed, but it is Jack's performance that really brings the movie to life and let's the characters breathe... It's great to see a Hollywood legend at the top of his game....

I saw this last night and absolutely loved it!

Jack Nicholson was made to play Warren Schmidt and it goes off without a hitch. Wonderful script, witty characters and quirky humor make this one of the top 5 films of the year, IMO.

Dear Ndugu...

Mammal 01-05-03 04:52 PM

I just saw the film...and loved it. I can't believe they rated it R. Only the bluest of bluenoses could be offended.

conscience 01-05-03 05:18 PM

I saw the Childreach commerical just a few minutes ago on television.

Not funny, but in context of the film, I laughed.

Are you a dumb blonde, too? ;)

On the other hand, I guess I could see how that could be...

I thought this was pretty good, my only complaints might be that it was a little slow and a little too long, but other than that I liked it.

It was nice to see Nicholson play a mostly under-stated older guy - essentially, someone other than himself. I agree that it had one of the best narrations in a movie in quite awhile (much better than Gangs' narration); the cast of his future in-laws was good; and the conclusion completely made up for any of the deficiencies that I could think of - it was quite touching, honestly.

By the way, the hot tub scene was completely unnecessary. That may haunt for a long time and I don't know if I can ever watch Kathy Bates again - Misery and The Waterboy will never be the same.

"Dear Ngudu..."

rkndkn 01-06-03 03:31 PM

Enjoyed it a lot. . .very amusing at times, but always with the underlying poignancy.

Giantrobo 01-06-03 08:20 PM

I LOVED THIS MOVIE.

the pacing is tough but not bad considering the many payoffs. Jack's facial expressions say more than any words .

I also loved the "Dear Ndugu" througout the movie because I'm involved in getting kids sponsored just like that and I KNOW it does GOOD.

I admit I was probably one of the 2 or 3 people on Earth who actually looked forward to seeing Kathy Bates nude. 'Cause ya'll know I lak 'em Plump and Kathy has got pretty face when she's not playing crazy chicks. Anyway, I thought she would be a bit less saggy than she was but hey, she's an older broad so whatayougonndo?. In fact, I question whether or not the woman getting into the hot tub was really her. Either way, her character was FU-NEE as hell

Was I the only one to notice the Cattle motif throughout this film? Cows are prominently placed at regular intervals (the prize-winner photos at the opening, the cattle trailer at the funeral, the cows along his journey, the cattle trailer, again, during his road trip, the bigass beef roast at the wedding, the cows pulling the wagons at the arch, etc.). I'm not sure, but I think this ties in with Schmidt's feelings that he's just another cattle, following the herd and never displaying any individuality, etc.

Thoughts?

kian69 01-19-03 02:16 AM

Yup really enjoyed this one too. I like the way they actually created a movie, with very little subject matter. Definitely deserves its best Screenplay nomination at the Golden Globes.

how exactly was the ending bittersweet? because he finally made a difference from unexpected place?

Jackskeleton 01-19-03 03:43 AM

I think he ment that when he started to write each letter he sounded like he was talking calm then he gets into a random problem in his life and it expands from their. I don't think he ment that he made a difference in Nudugo's life but that he was telling his problems to this kid in such a way.

I loved the movie. It told a story without really telling one. A great character study film that's not your normal brand and with great feel and a nice blend of comedy and seriousiness to it.

Great stuff. :)

Shall I dare take a screen cap of the scene... hmmm

Ok, I shall..

Be wared, not work friendly link(mature).... for that matter, not much of a friendly scene to anyone..

My eyes!

Why did I take these screen caps?

Let me tell you.. this picture of Jack best describes what I'm thinking of the screen caps...
