Lord of the Rings and Lawrence of Arabia in IMAX

From IMDb:
New digital remastering techniques will, for the first time, allow film spectacles to premiere in giant-screen Imax theaters on the same day that they are released to conventional theaters. (Treasure Planet is the first feature to get such a dual release.) Imax Co-CEO Brad Wechsler told Britain's Guardian newspaper that the third movies in both the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings series will open at Imax theaters simultaneously with their opening elsewhere. He said that Imax technicians have shown director Peter Jackson a test screening of the first Rings film, and that his reaction was: "This is the way I dreamt my movie would be shown." Since Imax projection booths cannot handle films longer than two hours presently, Rings will probably be shown with an intermission, Wechsler said. He also said that Imax is planning to release at least one remastered classic each year and has selected Lawrence of Arabia for 2003.
Seems like it's time for another "WHAT ASPECT RATIO WILL IT BE IN?" arguement. IMAX seems all too willing to butcher film for the sake of making them bigger. IMAX was always about the highest quality in their own documentary/educational genre, now they just want to parley their BIG DICKS (I mean screens) into showing the same Hollywood junk only bigger and butchered. I can't remember the last time the IMAX by me had a "real" IMAX movie playing. It's all disney and "enhanced 35mm". Press anouncements like this should specify how they intend to do this.

Well lets see.Lawrence of Arabia is 3hrs47mins so i guess they'll cut out 1hr47 mins, and the others will surely be over 2hrs long so we have some heavy cutting ahead of us.

If they show it in 2-hour chunks with an intermission, it could work, but if they alter the aspect ratio that might suck pretty hard.

Hopefully they op for doing the intermission. I'm sure anyone who is watching these films would understand and enjoy an intermission thrown into the mix.

Well, if they don't keep the aspect ratio and put in an intermission, then what's the bloody point? Lets hope they do it right.
