Amores Perros
Y Tu Mama Tambien I've seen a third of Amores Perros (until the disc starting acting up and I took it for exchange at Blockbuster) and I like it better than YTMT. So which ones would you feel confident recommending :D |
Like Water for Chocolate
|
I think it's called "Blood in, blood out" aka "Bound by honor".. it's the one with the classic line in any spanish gangbanger film: "Batos locos forever man!" :D
Also I hear "Lucia y el Sexo" is a really good, adult film, though i only watched the first 5 or 10 minutes of it and fell asleep. |
Heh, keep you eye out for "In a Glass Cage" (Tras el Cristal), due out on DVD next spring.
Lucia y el Sexo looks good (per the reviews, I've not seen it), but there is still no information on a DVD for it. A short list of Spanish DVDs that I have and highly recommend would be: The Son of the Bride (which the Blockbuster near here has, so maybe yours does too), All About My Mother, Open Your Eyes, The Grandfather, and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (with a young Antonio Banderas). You've seen the list I used to maintain, the list is due for a serious overall, I haven't modified it in several months: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=102547 Another new DVD is called The Devil's Backbone, a Spanish horror film, though I've not seen it. Finally, check out Tortilla Soup (also available at Blockbuster), this is a remake of Eat Drink Man Woman, but set in the Latino community. It is mostly in English. |
MI FAMILIA

Anything by Luis Bunuel, my favorites being Los Olvidados and The Exterminating Angel (though not available on DVD). Criterion has some of his later, more popular films on DVD. I recommend anything by the Spanish master.
|
"...I recommend anything by the Spanish master."
...so do I... unfortunately, not that many of his movies are available on DVD (El Angel exterminador, anyone? ... Robinson Crusoe? ... La Mort en ce Jardin?) . . . :o . . . |
Criterion has some of Bunuel's films, but none of his Spanish language films. In fact, there are no Spanish language Bunuel DVDs (by any producer) (except for a documentary on Bunuel, which is in French and Spanish), and no Spanish language Criterions (by any director).
I would love to see Los Olvidados, some day hopefully it will be released on DVD. |
"...I am still waiting on Los Olvidados to come out on DVD.
Surely it will, some day." ...ahh... it already has: on a French, All-Region, NTSC-encoded DVD...!... ...and with optional English subtitles, too!... . . . :o . . . |
foreignfilms.com lists the following Spanish movies based on site reviewers.
|
Either the top movies will totally absolutely blow me away or foreignfilms.com doesn't know what it's doing listing Amores Perros at 28 YTMT at 32.
Like Water for Chocolate is 41 but it's been recommended here more than once. |

"Frida" is in theaters now. It's mostly in English, but is set in Mexico and stars Salma Hayek.
|
I forgot about El Patrullero (Highway Patrolman) form 1992, directed by Alex Cox. It takes place in Mexico and is all in Spanish. Interesting since Cox is British (I don't know if he speaks the language or not) but not surprising since he loves Buñuel. His production company is called Exterminating Angel.
Not the best by any means, but a cool little flick with that sly Alex Cox style. The DVD I have is from England, Region 2 PAL. There's no US version that I know of. |
Well, I wanted a list from members here. Other than Amazon reviews, I don't trust other Top Movie lists. I'd prefer DVD, but if there's a movie I gotta see, I can do VHS :)
|
I guess nobody's heard of a little film called Scarface.
|
Central Station and Live Flesh are great movies.
