Ever notice how PG-13 movies have hardly any squibs or blood...
...yet on TV, I'm now starting to see rather graphic violence. Take for example "24," I've never seen that much use of squibs on a TV show. Hell, the shot of Karina Arroyave's
made me pull a Keanu... "woah!"
On another beef I have with the MPAA, I'm continually amazed that a socially worthless film about sexually active teens can pass with an "R," yet a film that depicts just how awful real life can be, like Requiem for a Dream, would probably get slapped with an NC-17. Luckily, the film was released Unrated to theaters.

Seantn: Whoops.. I take that back. k-qwick was actually serious.
k-qwick: No, not all films that are PG-13 are teen affairs. You can still have adult themes without being graphic. Granted, I think violent movies should NOT be toned down to make them digestible by teenagers... I mean, hell they're watching some dude shoot 1 million rounds of ammo but no blood comes out of his victims? Come on! At least the Matrix didn't do that.
That being said, a butt shot in Solaris is not "R" rating material. If you're read the book or even seen the original Tarkovsky film, you'll know that the content is at WORST PG-13. My opinion is that its more PG than anything.

yesterday, I read in the paper that the director of Solaris petitioned for a PG-13 rating and had to justify the but shots as being sensual, rather than sexual. Unfortunately, he apparently made some other cuts to the film, in order to get the PG 13 rating. I can only hope that the studio will release the uncut version on dvd!!! If not, we will need to petition the hell out of them.
I don't really understand the MPAA. In Europe, sensual nudity can be found in many films, some films with a PG equivalent rating. They have much more liberal attitudes towards nudity over there and they don't always associate nudity with the act of sex, which the MPAA apparently does. I don't have kids, but I would much rather have them watching a film with a few butt shots, than a film where violence pushes the limits of the "R" rating.
I believe the Roger Ebert adressed this on his site: the MPAA isn't as harsh about nudity or sex in comedies (Ie Van Wilder, American Pie) where you can show semen flying across the screen or other semi pornographic stuff. However, when it comes to serious dramas, too much sex or nudity will result in an NC 17. I think the MPAA needs to re-evaluate their standards.

Well, in today's Washington Post the litle blurb on this, they state:
"Director Soderbergh appealed the R rating Wednesday, explaining in a Los Angeles Times interview that he didn't think the scenes in question were really sexual. After careful consideration, the board apparently agreed allowing the film - nude Clooney and all - to carry the less restrictive PG-13 rating."

I really can't stand these people who drag their kids to R-rated movies and then don't think the movie was "appropriate" for children.
Well, no ****, Sherlock. It's rated "R." Restricted.
And, content aside, kids under eleven would probably be horribly bored by "American Beauty."
