Lantana

I rented this yesterday and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Anthony LaPaglia stars in this Australian-made drama about a cop who is in the middle of a missing person's case all the while dealing with his own marital hang-ups. Wonderfully acted all-around and a nicely woven story. Has anyone else seen this?

Saw this last year and thought it was very good. Solid acting, engaging story, nice and haunting music.

It also won a Titanic-slew of awards in Australia last year.

by the way, I've been using the movie poster as my desktop wallpaper

I saw it when it was released back in May i think. For a movie that wasn't well known it was brilliant. Here in Canada i don't
think this movie was in the theatres, well it should have been.

Yeah this is one of the best Aussie films i've ever seen, so glad people overseas are discovering it

Hmm... I'm kind of sorry I missed it. It was shown here a few weeks ago but from the previews we had seen it didn't look very good. I read a little on IMDB and it had gotten a good rating but just didn't seem like something I could get into.

I thought it was a bit overrated, personally. The chance that all the characters in the film are somehow connected to the disappearance is WAY too convenient of a plot device, IMO. And the whole motive of "love is the greatest mystery" seem altogether overblown. I dunno, I found the payoff at the end to be rather unsatisfactory, and the conclusion that the characters reach don't seem to be very meaningful (especially Lapaglia's and Kerry Armstrong's characters). But the acting ensemble is quite good.

I thought Lantana handled the inter-connected-ness alot less tritely than Magnolia. I think you may have been wanting something that the movie never intended to deliver (though I will admit that the ad campaign made one assume there was a different pay-out).

Here is my review of the DVD/movie http://www.kazart.com/mec/Reviews/Lantana.html

Grimfarrow, I have to disagree with you on this point. I was very amused by the films coincidental element; it made the whole film very humane. Especially, the scene where the cop and the man in the resturant ran into each other. :)

DVD SMURF :)

USE SPOILERS! PLEASE!

Man I hope that's not a major plot point.

It is kind of :(

Just finally checked this off of my to-see list last night.

Overall, I was very pleased and the performances were outstanding, especially from la Paglia and Kerry Armstrong.

I was also very glad I rented this. One of the better movies of last year (didn't take much, sadly).

It was a pretty good movie, but it wasn't up to the standard that I was hoping. After it won the Australian awards, I decided that I wanted to see it, but it was not a great movie. Still, much better than most of the blockbusters in theatres now.
