That last bit is eays - the oscars are not an indicator of quality. Case in point: Titanic, an ok flick - but hardly worth 14 oscars. And Matrix over Star Wars for best special effects? I'd like some of what the academy was smoking that year.

It's all about popularity - and Kane was anything but popular.

Hmmmm interesting since your contradicting yourself here. Wouldn't you agree that Star Wars (any one of them) is a far more popular movie than The Matrix. Following your logic Star Wars should have gotten some recognition and at least won one of the Oscars that they were competing against with The Matrix.

And for the record, The Matrix deserved every single one of them IMO.

caligulathegod 08-01-02 04:08 PM

This is a spurious argument. The Oscars are hardly an objective, consistant standard to judge anything by.

Lucy:"Beethoven wasn't so great."
Schroeder:"What do you mean Beethoven wasn't so great?!"
Lucy:"He didn't have his face on a bubblegum card."
IIRC, it wasn't until the 60s that Citizen Kane was "rediscovered" and recognized as any sort of masterpiece.

Speaking of living under a rock...did you not notice the backlash against Episode I? The Matrix is far more popular than The Phantom Menace.

And, for the record, Star Wars had the better SFX.

First of all, no I'm not living under a rock but thanks for asking
I was referring to the box office success, like his Titanic example (most of the time the amount made $$$ has a direct correlation with popularity).
And as for the "which one has the best effects" well I've discussed this about a hundred times in several other threads and quite frankly don't see the relevance of talking about it again, especially in a thread that has nothing to do with it. So I'll keep it to: To each his own.

Sorry, that post wasn't meant as an attack, I should have put a little ;)

My bad, honestly.

I think in this case the box office was not a correct indicator of popularity.

Citizen Kane is better than both, anyway.

Painkiller 08-02-02 01:24 AM

In any regard, Citizen Kane is a must-have for any serious film fan. The 2-disc set from Warner is a really good package.

wendersfan 08-02-02 10:39 AM

It's likely I've seen Citizen Kane more than any other movie. To quote an old friend, "Citizen Kane may not be the best movie ever made, but I've never seen a movie that's better."

Mourn 08-02-02 10:52 AM

Did no one watch the documentary?

The reason that Citizen Kane didn't win the oscar is because of Hearst. He threatened to print all of Hollywood's dirty little secrets that he had been covering up until then in his papers, sicked the FBI on Welles, engaged in a smear campaign, etc...

It's a great movie, it's too bad Hearst destroyed Welles, i've really liked him in both Kane and The Third Man.

Rypro 525 08-02-02 11:14 AM

has any one not seen this movie that will be watching tonight?

No way, man! Isn't TGIF on?

JaxComet 08-02-02 11:40 AM

Saw it but really have no desire to watch it again.......

Exactly. Before Citizen Kane was even in theaters, Hearst was all over it. The first release of the film was cut down dramatically in order for it to be released. And still after that, Hearst used everything in his power to destroy Welles. He was booed whenever mentioned at the Academy Awards, and when he won for Best Screenplay, the people applauded... for Herman Mankiewicz.

IIRC, it wasn't until the mid-50's that the original cut of Kane was discovered, and immediately considered the greatest movie ever made.

Pants 08-02-02 02:42 PM

Citizen Kane was never cut for its first release in 1941 and was never recut for its re-release in 1951. The problem with its 1941 release was not that it was cut, but that it was supressed. It had its premiere on the East Coast and West Coast, then played in maybe a half dozen theaters and that was it. It would be similar to the way contemporary studios today dump films like Crash with no publicity and minimal distribution.

btornado 08-03-02 12:56 AM

I'm watching Citizen Kane for the first time right now.

so, what did you think of it. one of the greats or overrated. and are you going to get the dvd since the picture and audio quality are much better.

Amadeus 12-30-02 11:59 PM

I haven't seen Citizen Kane and don't plan on it.It just doesn't interest me.

calhoun07 12-31-02 12:12 AM

Woah, that was quite a bump!

I have never seen it either. I am sure it's a very good movie, and I may catch it some time, but it's not on my top ten must see movies at the moment.

caligulathegod 12-31-02 12:13 AM

Thank you for that update. And now back to our regular programming.

Yep.Just goes to show the search feature does work.

caligulathegod 12-31-02 12:39 AM

Just curious, what would possess you to revive a 4 month dead thread just to say that? Me, I'd go "meh" and move on.

Boy, does this have nothing to do with this thread!
especially since this film was made in 1941 and has
an OAR of 1.37 : 1. So if you are waiting for the
anamorphic widescreen of this one you might want
to just put two peices of duct tape on your TV.
