This topic was thoroughly discussed in several threads a few months ago. Anyway, to reiterate:

Random order:

-IN A GLASS CAGE (1986)
-CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (1979)
-LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (1972)
-ANGST (aka. FEAR, SCHIZOPHRENIA)(1983, Kargl)
-CUTTING MOMENTS (1998)
-THE VANISHING (1988)
-FUNNY GAMES (1997)
-THE SEVENTH CONTINENT (1989)
-COMBAT SHOCK (1986)
-SALO (1975)
-BLEEDER (1999)
-I STAND ALONE (1998)
-AUDITION (1999)
-BENNY'S VIDEO (1992)
-WINTER SOLDIER (1971)
-MOSQUITO DER SCHAENDER (1976)
-TRACES OF DEATH SERIES

Conversely, not as disturbing as reputed:

-I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (1978)
-MAN BEHIND THE SUN (1987)
-LAST HOUSE ON DEAD END STREET (1977)
-THE UNTOLD STORY (1993)
-LUCKER (1986)
-LOVE ME DEADLY (1972)

The Cell
8MM
Kids
Gummo
Event Horizon - although that was primarily just scary. The ending had a unpleasant feeling to it.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre was the most disturbing piece of film I have ever seen. Almost like a documentary.

There's a flick I saw a few months ago on the Independent Film Channel that really bothered me. I think it was in German, told the story of two kids who take a family hostage just for kicks. The family is beaten, raped and eventually they are all killed. Most disturbing film I've ever seen but I can't remember the name of it. Anyone?

Requiem for a Dream was the first thought that came to me when I read the thread title. Disturbing, Uncompromising, Terribly Important, Utterly Brilliant - imho one of the best films of all time.

There have been others that have disturbed me to an extent... but too often it's just for effect and doesn't have such an important meaning and message like Requiem, so I don't end up liking them or ever seeing them again.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Happiness yet.

It's a great film, but not something you want to watch all the time.

The only movie i can think of that actually disturbed me was "Dee Snider's Strangleland". I don't know why but that psycho freaked me out!! i can watch pretty much any other movie by myself, but I absolutely refuse to watch that one!

Some of you desperately need to watch some non-Hollywood movies. 8mm? True Romance? Seven? The Cell?!?!?!?

Will Vielficken, you didn't think The Untold Story was disturbing? That was the most brutal rape scene I have ever seen.

I hear tell that Greenaway's The Baby of Mâcon is close to total hell to sit through. Can anyone confirm?

Yep, that's the movie, Funny Games. As I said, there are a few scenes that are really disturbing, the scene with the son (you'll know if you've seen it), bothered me alot. Don't want to give too much out in case someone wants to see it. Here's a review:

For me, the word 'disturbing' brings to mind one movie.

Un Chien Andalou (an Andalusian dog)

Spoiler:
Haven't been able to shake that damn image of the calf's eye being sliced with a razor (yikes!) out of my brain for over 12 years.

Michael Haneke is the director of Funny Games, and he's one sick puppy. Just wait until you see his newest film, "the Piano Teacher". The theater nearly rioted during the screening fo the film at Cannes.

I've seen some of the films cited and they're definitely good choices. I'm going to pick one that I dare say no else will choose (possibly because I'm nuts ).

Picnic at Hanging Rock

Effects films, especially when they're done well like Halloween, can certainly spook you out. But I've never seen a movie that made my skin crawl at times like the above mentioned one.
The disturbing aspect of this mystery is entirely psychological. Not to give too much away, something happens to several of the characters in the film. The scenes at Hanging Rock (an actual park I believe in Australia) creep me out in an almost elemental way. There are several odd things that occur leading up to what happens at the Rock and it gives the entire section of the film an unearthliness. You get a sense that something unspeakably horrible might have happened to the characters. I know this entire description has been very vague but it's impossible not to be without giving away huge plot points. Even if one doesn't get what I got out of it it's still a magnificent early Peter Weir film that I highly recommend.

Salo. Period. As a fan of disturbing/disturbed cinema, I have to say it takes the cake.

You all seem to be listing my favorites, most of which I own. Personally I didn't find the movie version of American Psycho disturbing at all. You should check out the book. I love the book, but it is not for the weak. An example of this includes sexual acts involving a drill, a rat, and an eye socket.
