Best Film of 1963 (ongoing survey)

A quick note:
  • Some people are now saying it's before their time, so they haven't seen enough to vote... If you've seen even one film that you really liked from the year, and thus you consider it the best you've seen (even if it's the only one you've seen), go ahead and vote. Heck, I was born in '82, so yeah, it's before my time too, but I've still got a favorite from most years back at least through the 70s, even if I've just seen 2 or 3 from the year.

I know we've got polls like this all the time around here, but I figure this one will be a little more comprehensive and perhaps even informative.

This thread will be for your pick for best film released during 1963 (think Oscar considerations for what's eligible). I'm not making it a poll because whether you like it or not, that would influence some people's choice.

Results will be posted in this thread, and all subsequent threads for each year, and they will be ongoing... so you can still vote here even weeks after other year's polls have begun.

Please start your post with your #1 film from 1963 (try to limit it to one - after all, that's the point - two at the most (I'll split the vote)), and yes, discussions are more than welcome!

Hud.

I got around to finally watching Charade tonight, and as always, Cary Grant does not disappoint! It's weird though how I realized right after it had begun that I'd just seen Bringing Up Baby a few days ago, and uh... it's not often that you see a man making out with a women and then her daughter so soon after!

But anyway, great movie - if you've never seen it, DO! Nonetheless, it can't take 8 1/2's place at the top of my list, but I'll at least use this as an excuse to bump the thread. ;)

greatjedi 11-21-02 12:26 PM

8 1/2 followed by Charade.

DrRingDing 11-21-02 01:19 PM

since i have yet to see both great escape and 8 1/2, my current vote goes to CHARADE.

and... JonTurner,

They weren't????? Damn, you learn something new everyday! I had no idea.

Hands down: 8 1/2!

Charade is also excellent, as well as it's a mad mad mad mad world, the nutty professor and the birds...sad to say I haven't seen any of the films nominated for best picture that year. But 8 1/2 is one of my favorite films of all time!

JonTurner 11-25-02 01:19 AM

The power of Fellini... 8 1/2 takes the cake, with 2 films featuring 2 of Mr. Coburn's best roles coming in 2nd and tied for 3rd. If you haven't yet done so, you should definitely see all 3 of these pictures soon!

1) 8 1/2 (10.5 votes)
2) The Great Escape (5)
3) Charade / From Russia with Love (2 each)

Although not quite the runaway that many, including myself, probably expected, 8 1/2 holds a wide enough margain to take the poll!

This one's closed.
