Best Film of 1990 (ongoing survey)
I know we've got polls like this all the time around here, but I figure this one will be a little more comprehensive and perhaps even informative.
This thread will be for your pick for best film released during 1990 (think Oscar considerations for what's eligible). I'm not making it a poll because whether you like it or not, that would influence some people's choice. Results will be posted in this thread, and all subsequent threads for each year, and they will be ongoing... so you can still vote here even weeks after other year's polls have begun. Please start your post with your #1 film from 1990 (try to limit it to one - after all, that's the point - two at the most (I'll split the vote)), and yes, discussions are more than welcome! Current Leader -- Goodfellas All Years: 2000 -- Requiem For a Dream* 1999 -- (currently) Fight Club 1998 -- (currently) Thin Red Line 1997 -- (currently) L.A. Confidential 1996 -- Fargo* 1995 -- (currently) Braveheart 1994 -- (currently) Pulp Fiction 1993 -- Schindler's List* 1992 -- Unforgiven* 1991 -- Silence of the Lambs 1990 -- Goodfellas* 1989 If you haven't voted on the previous years, feel free to go back and do so. *Poll closed, winner declared. |
1) Goodfellas
2) Misery 3) Dances With Wolves 4) Reversal of Fortune Of course, I've only got 18 total films on my list of what I've seen from '90, so I can't claim much of a top ten... still I'll be shocked if Goodfellas doesn't run away with this one. |

Jon,
La femme nikita was released here in the states in 1991 which qualifies it as a 1991 release |
Goodfellas followed closely by Miller's Crossing

Miller's Crossing

Feel free to laugh at my top choice, but these are how I arrange my favorites from this year:
Home Alone Freshman, The Arachnophobia Men at Work Goodfellas Ghost My Blue Heaven Back to the Future Part III Lord of the Flies |
My Pick: EDWARD SCISSORHANDS
#2: Goodfellas #3: Dances with Wolves |
Originally posted by LBPound Feel free to laugh at my top choice, but these are how I arrange my favorites from this year: Home Alone rotfl My choice would have to be Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, followed closely by GoodFellas (which I'm confident will win the poll by a landslide). |
Jacob's Ladder...followed by Goodfellas
|
Goodfellas
|
#1: GOODFELLAS
#2: THE GODFATHER, PART III #3: DANCES WITH WOLVES Man, that year sucked much ass (except for #1). |
Goodfellas.
It's my second best movie of the 90's behind Pulp Fiction. |
Originally posted by Sunday Morning Jon, La femme nikita was released here in the states in 1991 which qualifies it as a 1991 release Dreams, I watched in film classes last year and absolutely dispised. Sorry, but metaphors schmetaphors, it bored the hell out of me - and the score... god that was irritating - gave it a 2/10. Jacob's Ladder, it's been a year or so since I've seen, but the story just didn't work for me - gave it a 4/10. Miller's Crossing I enjoyed, but didn't find anything special about it. I'm a Coen Brother's fan, but I much prefer Fargo, and in a different genre, Big Lebowski... Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Barton Fink, and of course The Man Who Wasn't There are all on my "want to see asap" list! - Anyway, I gave MC 7/10. And of note, Henry & June and Edward Scissorhands are both sitting on my shelf waiting to be watched! Oh yeah, and to LBPound:  ;) - I enjoy it everytime I see it too - 7/10. |
Jon,
I can understand your hatred of dreams, but I rather enjoyed the poetry of the film and I dug what kurosawa was trying to say with it. You really need to keep up on those coen films, bud. They haven't made a bad film yet! All good in their own distinct yet similiar way. I happen to think MC is their best film to date. Great ganster film and the the coen's visual flairs in the film are amazing. This film SCREAMS dvd. It would serve it much better. Watch henry & june and edward scissorhands in that order. Two very different films. Ciao! |
Jon, I think the current leader for 1998 isn't Rushmore, but The Thin Red Line. Your post on 1/13 says that The Thin Red Line was leading 8.33 to 6.83 and TTRL got 1/2 more votes than Rushmore since then.

Even though this vote will fall on deaf ears with the blowout of Goodfellas, I loved The Grifters.

Hopefully we can get some more votes in (even though it's pretty obvious what will win), and I'll tally it up and start the next one tuesday or wednesday night.
