Best Film of 1993 (ongoing survey)

I know we've got polls like this all the time around here, but I figure this one will be a little more comprehensive and perhaps even informative.

This thread will be for your pick for best film released during 1993 (think Oscar considerations for what's eligible). I'm not making it a poll because whether you like it or not, that would influence some people's choice.

Results will be posted in this thread, and all subsequent threads for each year, and they will be ongoing... so you can still vote here even weeks after other year's polls have begun.

Please start your post with your #1 film from 1993 (try to limit it to one - after all, that's the point - two at the most (I'll split the vote)), and yes, discussions are more than welcome!

Current Leader -- Schindler's List

All Years:
2000 -- Requiem For a Dream*
1999 -- (currently) American Beauty
1998 -- (currently) Rushmore
1997 -- (currently) L.A. Confidential
1996 -- Fargo*
1995 -- (currently) Usual Suspects
1994 -- (currently) Pulp Fiction
1993 -- Schindler's List*
1992

If you haven't voted on the previous years, feel free to go back and do so.

*Poll closed, winner declared.

Schindler's List (which I expect will be the clear cut winner here)

For your consideration:
2) Short Cuts
3) The Fugitive
4) Carlito's Way
5) Kalifornia
6) In the Line of Fire
7) True Romance
8) Jurassic Park

Incidentally, checking out my list now, I found that I had Naked as #5 for '93 (since it came out then in the UK), but I should've had it in the '94 group... oh well. And looking into the same idea for this year, I'm finding that Romper Stomper premiered at the Toronto FF in '92, but didn't get released in the US 'til 93. It's on my 92 top ten, but I'm just gonna leave it there. YMMV.

You know what? I respect Schindler's List and think it's a wonderfully made movie, but it fails my very biased "test" of what makes the "best" - and that's rewatchability and repeat value. I've seen Schindler's List a few times and am blown away by Ralph Fiennes in it but, ultimately I can't name this the "best" movie of 1993.

My top four would be:
Army of Darkness Any movie that features Ash deserves to be a runner-up in my book.
Short Cuts Beautiful combination of Altman and Raymond Carver's art.
The Fugitive As complete an action film as ever has been made, gripping from start to finish. One of Harrison Ford's best performances.
The Piano I love this movie, the beautiful scenery and the wonderful way it depicts a woman's plight in the 1800s settler communities. My #2 movie of 1993.

...And the ultimate winner for me, the "best" film of 1993 for what that's worth: Groundhog Day. Bill Murray's best movie, and a surprisingly moving core to a silly idea. I never get tired of watching this movie and enjoy it every time I watch it, silly as it may be when compared to more "serious" film. So it's my pick.

I've never seen Schindler's List, but Groundhog Day is my # 1 film of '93 as well.

Was the Nightmare Before Christmas a '93 film as well? that would have been my second choice.

Also -- How many years are going to be done for this 'Best Film of"? I don't mind them at all, I'm just wondering.

Schindler's List. A safe choice, but the clear one for me.

Does this mean that your vote goes to Short Cuts? That's what I assume by posts like this, but just wanted to clear it up that you're not giving all ten equal stature.

Thanks. (and this post goes for Geofferson's list too)

I hope you don't mind them - in fact, I hope you enjoy them Anyhoo, I figure I'll keep going so long as we keep getting lots of votes, and it doesn't turn into too many posts like, "heck, I don't know what I've even seen from that year" or whatnot.

I know it'll eventually get a little tough though, since even for me, once I get down past about '85 or so, I've seen fewer than 10 films from each year... heck once you hit the 60s, there are a few years from which I've seen zippo. Of course, I'm only 19, so YMMV.

Yes, Short Cuts would be #1.

Just wanted to throw out a few more contenders (no one had mentioned A Bronx Tale yet).

In keeping with wasting my vote each year, I'm going with A Bronx Tale.

I'll have to go with Schindler's List. Philadelphia is really close...really close. True Romance and Groundhog's Day right behind. The Fugitive is right there, too.

Anyway, I haven't seen a ton of the big movies from this year, so I don't know what my vote is worth.

I am a devout Altman fan, and Short Cuts is easily one of his 3 or 4 best films, so not a tough decision for me.

safe choice: Schindler's List. Though it's not one I'd choose to watch very often.

The one I watch most: Nightmare before Christmas.
