It was technically released in the US in 2001, so I actually put this on my "Best Film of 2000s" list instead.

TIE:

Chasing Amy
&
Boogie Nights

FreshOne 01-09-02 02:47 PM

For me, Chasing Amy hands down. Several great films rivaled it that year, but in the end, Kevin Smith is the man. Beautiful picture.

Nice race going between 3 very well-deserving films...

1) L.A. Confidential (5.5 votes)
2) Boogie Nights / Sweet Hereafter (5 votes each)

The 1996 Thread is now open here.

Keep the votes coming!

Boogie Nights

vasb 01-10-02 09:24 AM

One of the best films of the decade:

L.A. Confidential

(though The Sweet Hereafter and Boogie Nights are a close second and third)

funstan 01-10-02 08:46 PM

1. Boogie Nights
2. L.A. Confidential
3. The Ice Storm

BizRodian 01-11-02 03:44 AM

I'm going to get bashed for this... but...

The Lost World: Jurassic Park

Yeah, you all see it as a stupid cashin sequal, but I see it as a smart film that is better then the first one.

Gattaca, Boogie Nights and La Confidential are also great films too...

I've not seen Ice Storm, it's in my DVD player about to be watch in an hour or so.

Ashirg 01-11-02 04:57 AM

Sweet Hereafter and Ice Storm

Frank TJ Mackey 01-11-02 06:14 AM

The Ice Storm

Boogie Nights
The Sweet Hereafter
Chasing Amy

truth be told, any of these could've been my top pick as these are all in my top ten of the 90's.

Geofferson 01-11-02 09:04 AM

Boogie Nights
The Ice Storm
L.A. Confidential
Donnie Brasco

The Antipodean 01-11-02 02:45 PM

I'd say my top three are
Chasing Amy
L.A. Confidential
Boogie Nights

And by the narrowest of margins, I'd say Boogie Nights was the best of the three and thus the best of '97. Tough call!

yikes! you must not have seen Hard Boiled or The Killer...

I throw in LA Confidential in for another vote. That scene in which the tension builds where Russel Crowe is gripping that chair and then just
Spoiler:
smashes it to pieces and rushes into the interview room and sticks his gun into that guys face and starts pulling the trigger!!!!

Nothing beats that, that year.

Doctor Gonzo 01-12-02 05:55 PM

TITANIC!!!

JonTurner 01-13-02 10:17 PM

With a few more votes in, Boogie Nights takes over the lead:

1) Boogie Nights (8)
2) L.A. Confidential (7.5)
3) Sweet Hereafter (5.5)

Axl Rose 01-14-02 12:31 AM

1. Starship Troopers
2. LA Confidential
3. As Good As It Gets
