First of all, David, the link doesn't lead to an explanation of LB's banning, so I really can't comment on this.

But...

As a Moderator on another major DVD Forum site - okay, not as major as DVD Talk - I know that cold detached sentences on the monitor can be misinterpreted as being malicious or hateful, but irony is a subtle artform. That's why Smileys were invented...to state the obvious.

In the past, I've fallen victim to LB's satirical wit...but it is all in good fun. He is a decent chap...honest.

So why don't you guys stop being stubborn, admit you
overreacted and un-ban him instead of rationalizing to
yourselves that it's beneficial to the site to not
have him here?

I had posted this in the results thread for this poll too.

I really prefer handling these inquires via email and would request that if you have any further comments, that you email them to me.

I believe the above will provide a more complete explanation, but to address your point about irony and wit and overreaction...you are correct, it is hard to properly convey sarcasm and irony via the printed word. And even in face-to-face conversations, it can cause misunderstandings and arguments. But LBPound was not conveying his meaning without other members taking offense. He was asked to amend this and he did not. He was warned and suspended for this behavior and yet continued to practice it. He left us with no other option than to ban him.

So we were aware of the difficulties of communication via this medium, and I do not think that we overreacted.

I hope that addresses your questions of our actions, and I regret that things had to come to this, but LBPound was given ample opportunity and far more leeway than a new member would have received. And while I fully expect him to see this differently, he really brought this on himself.

In case anyone cares, here are my reasons:

1. Brazil - two versions of the film, great commentary, exhaustive supplements, and a classic look on how studio execs can knock the piss out of a great movie. Plus it's my favorite movie... :)

2. The Fantasia Anthology - the beauty of this is that both Fantasia and Fantasia: 2000, as standalone DVDs, are fantastic in and of themselves. Packaged together, plus an extra disc loaded with supplements, makes this one a no-brainer.

3. Seven Samurai - if you've seen it, you know why it's here. Throw in Michael Jeck's fantastic commentary -- still in my mind, the best ever recorded -- and you have what is definitely the most played DVD in my collection.

4. Toy Story: The Ultimate Toy Box - shorts, great commentaries, an infusion of Pixar spirit, fun, and energy, supplements galore, and two of the greatest films ever made? A great package.

5. Fight Club - great presentation of a great movie, lots of commentaries that are actually worth listening to, and supplements that are entertaining and informative without being fluffy. This is the stuff.

6. Rushmore: Criterion Collection - possibly one of the best single-disc DVDs ever created. I absolutely adore the menus and overall presentation of this disc. Not to mention a modern-day comedic classic of a film, great commentary, hilarious bits from the MTV Video Music Awards, and lots of the other worthwhile extras, Rushmore is a must-have.

7. This Is Spinal Tap: Criterion Collection - Despite the fact that I love the MGM version, with its anamorphic enhancement and WONDROUS commentary with the three mains in character, I still give CC the edge. Classic movie, two commentaries, the 20-minute promotional film, trailers, Heavy Metal Memories, and over an hour of deleted material. Plus no player-generated subtitles. I'm still kvelling...

8. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves - My god, Disney made this film look like it was created yesterday. And damn, if the story still doesn't hold up. The "immersive DVD experience" works, and works well, and the extras are great. I'm a total sucker for Walt Disney "commentaries" like the one here and on Fantasia. Gorgeous disc all around.

9. Gladiator - What a complete package. A favorite movie, in a dazzling transfer with rocking DD and DTS, great commentary by Ridley and friends, classy yet moody menus, and a host of fascinating documentaries and supplemental materials. Great set.

10. Alien: 20th Anniversary Edition - Another great single-disc edition; over 2 and 1/2 years old, but still holds up remarkably. The movie looks and sounds great, Ridley's commentary is irresistable, the extras are plentiful, and the menus that guide you through the Nostromo are schaweet.
