My Sherwood BDP-5004 just died. I guess.

Had it for several years, of course. Haven't used it much in a while because I recently got an Apple TV and joined the streaming world, so I've been occupied getting acquainted with that new toy. But I wanted to listen to an audio commentary tonight, and put in my new BD of ALIEN that I just picked up on sale. I got to the menu, then thought of something else I wanted to check on a different disc. Then once I put ALIEN back in, the Sherwood huffed and puffed for a bit, then said "NO DISC." I'd seen that before, as many of us Sherwood owners have. So I rebooted the player, and now it's stuck permanently on the "System Startup" screen and won't respond to any remote commands. Only the On/Off button on the player works. I've rebooted it a few more times with the same result.

-Anyone seen this before? Is it time to give up and shop for a replacement?

-What ARE my replacement options?

-And how the hell do I get my new disc out?

I realize this is a good long life for a piece of electronics these days, but it still puts me in a foul mood. I'm very much not a tech-oriented person and find shopping for devices of any kind stressful, besides the fact that I wasn't planning on spending this money right now.

Thanks, all.

And now it's working again, of course. Presumably this is a sign of impending senility on the part of my Sherwood and it will start doing stuff like this more often, so the question remains - What are the options now for all-region, PAL/NTSC converting blu ray players?

Oppo is the best- and they'll even fix your player if it breaks a few years from now rather than just saying "screw off, buy a new one!"
