What DVD's 1rst prompted you to get a Region Free DVD player?
My titles were :
3 disc ultimate editon of "Picnic at Hanging Rock", and Anamorphic versions of "Thief" , "Young Frankenstein", & "Bound". I also find that MANY DVD TV series are MUCH cheaper than their American counter parts- Just wondering what titles may have made you decide to go Region Free!

I don't know if it was any one thing in particular. I remember seeing that Bucky O'Hare had been released on region 2 and wanting a region free player, not sure when I bought my player or even what the first thing I got was, but I do remember wanting the Phantasm set, the special edition of Creepshow and Bucky O'Hare and it came in handy when they started releasing Power Rangers in Germany long before Shout Factory released them here.
I haven't bought a non-region 1 DVD in a VERY long time. I think the last one I bought was Power Rangers Zeo in early 2010.

I surprisingly never went region free, considering all the DVDs I bought and sold over the years, the somewhat odd tastes I have, I guess there was just never a title that pushed me over the edge.
I mean, there probably was one, but I never saw it because every DVD forum I ever went on forced the non region 1 stuff into a separate forum instead of letting it be a part of the regular conversation. Who knows how many "must have" titles I missed over the years because they were crammed into their own little cupboard under the stairs on the forums?

The UK release of "Jerry Springer: The Opera". I haven't bought many R2 discs simply because the exchange rate for the dollar sucks.

After seeing the prices of the 9 film Coffin Joe Collection and the 19 film Russ Meyer Collection. I knew It was worth it to purchase a region free player.

The region 2 Russ Meyer collection pushed me over the edge. Given how the estate has been completely mismanaged here in region 1 land, going region-free seemed like the only good answer. Amazingly, it's still the only good answer all these years later.

I won a box of 30+ asian science fiction/superhero/horror films on eBay. Almost all of them were something other than region 1. The region-free player seemed a viable alternative to trying to ass-kick myself to death.

It was a bunch of Hammer titles. My first order was a vampire box set (Twins of Evil, Vampire Circus, Countess Dracula), She, The Quatermass Experiment and the non Hammer Island of Terror which starred Peter Cushing and Dr. Terror's House of Horrors with Lee and Cushing.

Having collected PAL videotapes before DVD came along, I was intent on being region-free from the very first day I bought into the format. I did a lot of homework/research before buying my first player (which ended up being a Sampo).

Which of course is now out on R1 DVD from Dragon Dynasty. I have multiple copies myself, including three VHS copies, two bootleg, one legit, and three DVD copies, one bootleg R1, one Shaw Bros/Celestial R3 and one Dragon Dynasty (R1). Plus a Celestial VCD. That's 7 copies in all!

Battle Royale R3
Crying Freeman R2
I ended up buying a Malata in 2001. I still have it but put it in storage
after getting an Oppo in 2005.

I lived in Taiwan and Japan from 2001-2004, so when I came back I HAD to buy one to watch some of the stuff that I'd picked up during those years.
About the only DVDs that I came back with that haven't since been released in Region 1 are a couple of Japanese DVDs, one of four episodes of Ultra Q and another of the full-color Japanese cut of Kill Bill Vol. 1, and a few really cheap (both in price and quality) Taiwanese DVDs, such as The Supernaturals and Night Life.
