Yup. Paid alot of money for that set IIRC. Probably close to $90 ordering off the HKL website.

I haven't really gotten any Region 2 or 3 DVDs lately after HDTV's took off. They look like crap playing them off my region free DVD player through an RCA connection on my HDTV.

Joining DVD talk and finding out about Shaolin Soccer, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and the availability of region free (software) players - i only had an HTPC at the time. Then, i found out about HKL and Celestial - there was no going back. i eventually got a CyberHome CH-DVD 500 player a couple of years later.

I've bought some Masters of Cinema releases and a bunch of UKTV (like Brass Eye, Alan Partridge, Darkplace)...

But the title that first made me take the leap was Blake's 7.

Still hasn't seen a region 1 release and likely never will.

Re: What DVD's 1rst prompted you to get a Region Free DVD player?

but I never saw it because every DVD forum I ever went on forced the non region 1 stuff into a separate forum instead of letting it be a part of the regular conversation. Who knows how many "must have" titles I missed over the years because they were crammed into their own little cupboard under the stairs on the forums?
And where is this thread now?

I'm not entirely certain but it might have been a Mainland China DVD release of HERO. Hmm...this is going way back...I think I bought it from monkeypeaches.com...wow, yeah, I think that was the name of the site...that was a long time ago.

But the China "Hero" disc was region 0 anyway....

yes, the site was called monkeypeaches, the HK movie info site. I thought about it recently again, but it seems to be gone...

Wasn't it the one that if you played the English subs the company logo would show up within the movie. That irritated the hell out of me. It also came with a sort of limited case.

You're thinking of the director's cut edition. (Which was weaker than the theatrical cut.) The original didn't have the watermark.

This was the limited edition:

I suppose then that HERO must have been my first ever order from someplace outside the U.S.

I don't really recall then what my first purchase was that required the use of a region-free player. Maybe I didn't buy a region-free player for any one title in particular. It was more a general case of wanting to see films such as HERO or MUSA much sooner rather than later.

I had been watching my overseas DVD's on my computer when this prompted me to finally get an actual player. It simply was too amazing to watch on a small computer screen. Started with the Malata like many here when that crapped out got the Jaton and still have it.

Re: What DVD's 1rst prompted you to get a Region Free DVD player?

I was exposed to Japanese Anime laser discs back in the early 90's, although my anime collection consisted entirely of things I copied from friends and bootleg tapes I bought at shows. I believe my original motivation was to stock a shelf with R2 anime, but to this day I have just three Japanese DVD's. On the other hand, I do have DVD's from Germany, Italy, France, Australia, the Netherlands, and a whole lot of stuff from the UK. (I thank web sites like DVD Compare for opening my eyes.) Including Blake's 7. Although I could have sworn there was a very limited R1 run of the complete series.

Don't remember exactly but it goes all the way back to films like "Shiri" and "Joint Security Area" in 1999-2000.

And now the complete run of ULTRA Q is out on R1 DVD with English subs.!

Is one of the Ultra series missing an episode? Maybe Ultraseven?

Re: What DVD's 1rst prompted you to get a Region Free DVD player?

I can't remember precisely which ones were the trigger, but there were a bunch only available in Europe that I had been waiting for years to be released on R1. I finally gave up biding my time and bought a region-free.
And I convert all my PAL discs to a R0 NTSC IFO and record them to DVD-R so they are playable in all players we have or might encounter. I do the same with Blu-ray discs. A big "Fuck you" to the conglomerates that make all this such a hassle.

Re: What DVD's 1rst prompted you to get a Region Free DVD player?

I've always been a huge fan of the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series of the 1980s; back in the day, I taped it on Beta. When I saw it on Amazon UK for c. $40 incl. shipping (typically $120-130 on Amazon US), I took the plunge into region free DVD. Picked up a Pioneer 220. That was three years ago. The cost for the Pioneer plus the UK Holmes set was about the same as the US cost of the DVDs alone. No brainer. I order now several times a year from Amazon UK.

Same here. Absurdly, Amazon UK's shipping to Canada is cheaper that Amazon.com's. Consequently, I never order from .com
