Couple of questions regarding DVDs from Japan.

1. Can subtitles be turned off?
2. Since movies are in "NTSC" format...
all I need is player that plays region 2?

Reason I ask, in past I bought Laser Disc...
all had Japanese subtitles burned in.
Also, couple years ago I bought DVD "Tommy"
and that had subtitle that cannot be turned off.

I was @ a Japanese etailer site last night,
and found following titles I would like to buy.
[*]Slingblade "DTS"[*]Pretty Woman "DTS"[*]Convoy[*]Basic Instinct "DTS"[*]Lake Placid "DTS"[*]
All "Anamorphic" with exception of "Convoy"?

Since all above run $40.00 to $60.00 each...
don't want to buy them, if forced with subtitles?

Though I cannot respond specifically about the titles you mentioned, all the DVDs that I have purchased recently have removeable subs.

Most, not all, movies from Japan have removable subtitles. All you need is a player that can play region 2 NTSC. I have Slingblade and other Japanese discs. The ones you want all have removeable subs. When I say there are some movies that have nonremoveable subtitles is to say that there are some older dvd releases from 3-4 years ago that had subtitles burned in.

I read a great review (I can't remember where) of Basic Instinct DTS from Japan. Comparing it to the R1 version is basically choosing between Bush vs Gore The Jap version "solarized" Ms. Stone's ahem.. during the interogation scene but a has little more gore especially in the opening sequence - that is if I remember it the review correctly.

Its true, its true Benny88 they did censor that particular part. Anyway saw some sale of Yen 1800 DVD's at Sakuraya Shinjuku.And you get 13% on points, i guess that's a bargain!

anyone have a list of e-tailers/companies that sell japanese import dvds (ie anime, drama, av, etc.)? hopefully, they're not all region 2...
