Re: Foreign War Movies
Just finished the other Larisa Shepitko offering from the Crieterion eclipse set, Wings, and I personally think it is even greater than The Ascent. In fact it most likely goes straight into my top 20-25 movies of all time and convinces me, on the basis of these two films alone, that Shepitko was the greatest female director of all time.

Re: Foreign War Movies
France Inter was talking tonight about an anti-war movie that was banned for years in France and which was highly regarded by Renoir and Truffaut. It is "Les honneurs de la guerre". This movie is supposed to be re-released on DVD soon.

Otherwise I watched a couple of decent war movies picked randomly at my local library:
- Land and Freedom by Ken Loach - about the Communist fighters coming from all over Europe to fight the Spanish civil war in 1936.
- A Time to Love and a Time to Die - Douglas Sirk. Well this WWII movie is american I know but shot on location in Berlin about German soldiers by a German born director,.... And Erich Maria Remarque is playing in it !

TAE GUK GI: THE BROTHERHOOD OF WAR (2004) - a Korean movie about the Korean War. I saw it on the big screen and thought it was great, if a tad melodramatic.

Re: Foreign War Movies
JSA isn't a war film, it's just set on the DMZ.
"The 9th Company" is a good Russian flick about their war in Afghanistan.

"The Assembly" - Communist Chinese vs. Japanese in WWII, Communist Chinese vs Nationalists, and Chinese vs US/S. Koreans in Korean War.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0881200/
"Yamato: The Last Battle " - Japanese in the Pacific in WWII.
