need recommendations for good foreign action/adventure..

...from the last 5 years.

I used to keep up with stuff, but have been somewhat out of the loop for a while.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

And please keep in mind it has to be R1 or R0, I don't have an all-region player. Thanks!

Finally ordered Dobermann and watched it this past weekend.

It was quite possibly the worst movie, foreign or otherwise, that I've ever watched.

I cannot fathom how anyone would enjoy it!

Haphazard collection of mindless action sequences with over-thet-top violence and sex. Horrible acting (over acting all the way). Mindless plot. Horrible dialogue.

I didn't expect to see any acting worthy of an Oscar or anything, but man, that was just bad.

Anyone wanna buy a region 0 copy, watched only once? :)

I don't know if this really counts as action/adventure, but "TELL NO ONE" is an excellent mystery/suspense story that's essentially a high-minded thrill-ride with great actors doing their thing in a tightly executed narrative. Not exactly obscure, but in case you missed it...

Also, I believe [REC] has finally been slated for a US DVD release soon. I haven't yet seen it, but have been greatly looking forward to it!

Actually, I'm somewhere in between you and Slateef (as I went out on a limb and bought the Amalgama release based on your review). Overstylized, frenetic, full of action with a few key moments (most notably - motorcycle death, "head to pavement" sequence and the tranny beat down in front of the family sequence which was over the top ruthlessness! Karyo was balls to the wall in this one!). But unlike one of Guy Ritchie's better films (Lock Stock and Snatch) the characters were a bunch of unlikable 'tards except for Cassell and a somewhat underutilized Bellucci, seriously. The lines kept coming at you but dialogue was of low denomination. Although I can see where Ritchie may have received some of his ideas from - easily. I think what I didn't connect with was the type of dark humor and Ritchie's films work for me on that level.

Another thing I did like about the film was that Cassell reminded me of some better nihilistic Japanese character actors (specifically Asano from Sharkskin Man and Peach Hip Girl) but even there, there was a problem. Asano's character had depth whereas Cassell was more one dimensional (maybe two).

All around it's a decent film but I don't believe it's a great film. But I can respect it for being one of the first in a line of the nihilistic high octane ensemble club with dark humor and plenty of action. If I had seen it back in the day before getting acclimated with Ritchie's works and/or some of my other Japanese favorites I'd probably appreciate it more.

Hit or miss I imagine.

Slateef, what typically bakes your noodles? Even older Spaghetti westerns, classic Italian Poliziotteschi (hard core crime driven action thrillers), epic Sci-fi, war, "inspirational" (from a red China perspective) choreographed martial arts/fantasy related films, yakuza, Korean dark crime action pieces? etc ...

Anything for a reference point.

The French film Nid de Guepes (The Nest) was a lot of fun. 7 year old movie, but definitely worth a look IMO.

I like each and every one of those genres...as long as it is a good, thought-provoking movie. I dislike mindless movies with stylized action simply for the sake of action without having any redeeming qualities, that's why I disliked Dobermann.

I looked on amazon and Ebay, the only version they both have is one with an English soundtrack (DD 5.1). Is there another version available that has the original French soundtrack? Since this is a French movie, I am assuming that the original dialogue was in French. So I am assuming that the English track would be dubbed. Am I correct in my assumptions? I hate dubbed movies. I enjoy watching in the original tongue, with subs.
