TBS aka NOTHING TO LOSE (Pieter Kuijpers, 2008) - powerful Dutch thriller, now on DVD
 

I expect that some of you might be familiar with the work of Director Pieter Kuijpers from the Netherlands. Still, despite success both on the festival circuit and in the international distribution of his films, I'd put forth that Director Kuijpers is still somewhat under the radar for many. A couple of his more popular films include the thriller OFF SCREEN (2005) and the crime film VAN GOD LOS (2003), both were released on DVD in the U.S.

TBS (alternate title - NOTHING TO LOSE (2008)) is his most recent directorial effort and it is a very good suspense/thriller. It was released on Dutch DVD yesterday and does include English subtitles. The film is also slated for an English-friendly, Blu-ray release in the Netherlands (I don't know the coding in regard to the Blu-ray release). TBS is also slated for a U.S. DVD release in the future.

I feel the film is somewhat spoiler-sensitive so I won't discuss too much except to say it is a powerful, character-based thriller. I thought the lead performers - Theo Maassen & Lisa Smit - were top notch and showed great chemistry together. Theo Maassen is actually a leading Dutch comedian and took the part because he wanted to do something different...he succeeded.

To make it easier for those of us in the U.S., I plan to contact Xploited and see if Tony can obtain stock of the Dutch DVD.

The plot summary from IMDb is as follows:
Johan, convicted for killing his own father and sister, escapes from a TBS clinic (a criminal hospital in the Netherlands) and tracks down his mother in order to prove his innocence.

Just to note that this was released on R1 U.S. DVD this past Tuesday under the English title NOTHING TO LOSE. The best price seems to be from DVDPacific at $15.81. It isn't listed at DD or DVDPlanet. DVDPacific states it is anamorphic. Though a look at the back coverart at DVDEmpire does not make explicit mention of that fact...it simply lists "widescreen" (which should be safe enough?).

i don't know. is from a no name company so you never know plus is hard to know if it will have any ghosting or other pal conversion problems. i ended up picking the dutch release a couple of weeks ago.
