My Bluberry Nights (Studio Canal)

Wong-Kar Wai's French premiere of his Cannes entry My Blueberry Nights has been set to be released on June 3rd. In France the films will receive three different releases (unlike the UK) hence my post here (extras to be compared).

Via the Times:

Optimum are bringing the Canal disc to the UK on June 23. Precisely the same coverwork and the following extras:

10,279 miles since Hong Kong: My Blueberry short documentary
Cannes Press conference with Wong Kar Wai & Norah Jones (20 mins)
Character Study
Trailer

Doesn't Optimum region code some of their discs?

Has anyone heard anything about possible director's cuts out there, or how the other region releases compare to the U.S. theatrical version that's coming next month? I know there were some trims made on the way to the U.S.

CD-Wow claims this European version is 21 minutes longer: http://www.cdwow.us/My-Blueberry-Nig...t/view/3101533

Jamie,

The Canal print which has been used for the few available non-US discs so far (Russian, Danish, French, etc) is indeed representative of what was shown at Cannes: 111min. Anything around the 90+ mark would be a US thing.

Thanks, Pro-B. Hunting different sites was turning up different running times. I may plunge in on that Danish one.

Jamie,

I did a little bit of research on the timing issue and there is indeed plenty of conflicting info out there. First of all the upcoming UK disc is listed as being 91 min yet Optimum submitted two different prints for classification at the BBFC. The theatrical version running at 95m 12s and the home video version running at 91m. I am unsure where does the discrepancy stem from as neither of those versions reveal any cuts. Go here (click on search, left, bottom, and type up My Blueberry Nights):

http://www.bbfc.co.uk

Furthermore, on the back of the Danish disc I see 91min. being mentioned even though it does appear to be a direct port of the French disc.

This review for the French disc which I was referring to points to the 111min:

http://www.dvdrama.com/fiche.php?9717

So, there is either some mislabeling (as the Canal print is the only one in circulation in Europe) or someone did something after the Cannes screening. What is certain is: there are two versions which the BBFC recognizes.

The Cannes version was 111 minutes. Wong subsequently cut about 16 minutes to bring it down to 95, and another two minutes were removed (with Wong's consent) from the U.S. release. AFAIK the Cannes cut never played commercially anywhere; I saw the film in China and it was definitely around an hour and a half, and Studio Canal's official website for the French theatrical release gives the running time as 1h15m. If the continental DVDs really are 111 minutes (per CD-Wow and DVDrama), then that's quite a coup, but I suspect those sources are in error. (Note that the DVDrama review also claims Tim Roth is in the movie.)

And the two versions Optimum submitted to the BBFC are probably the same cut -- remember, the home video version should be 4% shorter due to PAL speedup.

Yeesh. I had originally tried to hunt via a Wong Kar-Wai fan forum, and no one there was even really discussing it, having apparently written the film off. I may have to wait a little longer on this and see if a source like DVD Beaver does any comparisons before taking a plunge.

Thanks again, guys, for looking around.

If anyone is able to confirm one way or the other on region coding for the U.K. Blu-ray, please let us know.

Yeah, I just noticed the Region B label on the French release pictured above. If either the UK or French release turns out to be region free that would be great (probably unlikely with a new release film like this though). Or I really hope someone figures out a region free hack for the PS3 sometime soon. After all these years, I'm not used to being region restricted again!

Such a drag to have to concern ourselves with region-coding again; such a drag that this information is guarded like a state secret.

Can you link that, Cosmic? I read their review of the R2 DVD and all the subsequent comments and perused their HD content, but was unable to find any confirmation that the BD is reg-B.

"Optimum Home Entertainment have announced the UK Region B Blu-ray Disc release of My Blueberry Nights on 23rd June 2008 priced at £24.99."

Perhaps I'm misinterpreting their usage? They may be stating UK and "region B" as synonymous, without actually knowing the coding of the release.

Nah, that looks fairly definitive, including the moderator's posting below that also indicates Region B. I suppose we may learn differently, but so far I've seen not a single review of this release.

And DVD TIMES has just reviewed the BD release, confirming Region B. What's more, the reviewer (John White) confirms in the comments section beneath the review that he tried the disc unsuccessfully in a Region A player, and also notes that "Optimum have confirmed that coding is on their future releases".

A real shame as Optimum has a fairly decent catalog.
