Anyone see Wong Kar Wai's new porno...I mean ad...for Phillips?

I still think Wong Kar Wai is nothing more than a big-budget 1990s-style porno director influenced by Andrew Blake. This movie should be called "Night Trips 2007."

"nothing more"... I doubt highly.

I mean his influences and aesthetics are in the same area as Andrew Blake... but sensual imagery alone doesn't cross the line to porn directing.

Too bad, I just can't watch that on youtube. Maybe it will atleast end up on stage 6 soon.

Thanks for the link.

Is it supposed related to 2046?

the song and few images are directly from 2046.

masuerte 11-04-07 12:33 PM

I doubt it's related... I think wong kar wai just did a little self plaigiarism ;^)

or revisiting themes that he's currently into...

wish this was included in the 2046 dvd though.

Quite right! Blake's work is far more intelligent and sophisticated than a lot of the serious director's I have seen venture into the realms of mainstream erotica. If not for his soft-core attachment which has kept him off the mass(es') radar I honestly believe that he could have been enormously successful (as he is currently in the niche market his name is often associated with).

Yeah, this is really the first time I've seen his work and wow I have got to say that it is very beautiful. Wish he sold his stuff in HD or blue ray form.

SONY Pictures own 2046 and they have been quite good with some of the more popular foreign films from last year/year before (The Lives of Others, Almodovar's VOLVER, Verhoven's Black Book). I am told Run Lola Run and DAS BOOT are also set to be released on Blu Ray this coming February/March.

Hopefully 2046 is not far behind. This film would look gorgeous on Blu.

Well, I certainly think that Wong Kar Wai's recent films work better as advertisements for new HDTVs than as films. When I walked by this ad playing on these new Phillips HDTVS, it certainly made me stop and check out what it was they were playing on it. And it was the first time that I was impressed with the video quality of a Phillips HDTV. In the past, the problem with most Phillips HDTVs is that they make the cinematic film quality change to soap opera tv quality (such as instead of watching a movie, it looks like one is watching a behind-the-scenes making-of-a-movie).

High Definition filming of hot actresses walking around, highlighting their angles/poses, is certainly a great way of selling HDTVs. ;) Sort of reminiscent of Mike Judge's Idiocracy, I wish marketers just played high definition/high quality porn to sell TVs. Just cut to the chase and forget all those marketing gimmicks and show people what they really want to see!

I was talking about Blake... WKW's stuff is a given. Just... good luck finding good prints of his old films.

O...I misunderstood you then. Regarding Blake's work it really should not be that difficult for distribs to promote it. He appears to be a marquee name on some of the leading soft-core satellite channels. In fact, mainstream channels such as the German RTL like him a lot and so does the Scandinavian Film +. I have never seen his work on any of the satellite channels here in the US but I don't get any of the pink ones either.

I very much like his style though and believe that if he would have stepped behind a commercial camera his work would've been greeted enthusiastically.

Marc Dorcel in France is also incredibly talented (and most of the 80s directors that used to shoot for him) but nowadays I believe he is simply XXX.

If Christopher Doyle breaks up with Wong Kar Wai, Wong should call up Blake, and they'll bond just fine once they start talking about what brand smoke machines they use and all the different colored light filters they like to use...;)
