Infernal Affairs Complete Edit
 

After picking up the R2 Tartan of the original Infernal Affairs and remembering how much I really love that film, I've been musing about picking up and/or renting Parts 2 & 3. Doing a bit of research, I came across what looks to be a separate release of the chronological edit on HK Flix.

Does anyone have recommendations of the Parts 2 and 3 separately vs the chronological cut? I've tried wading through this thread but couldn't seem to find a answer, although the DVDtalk review the OP Trilogy seems not to favor it as much.

You should definitely not watch the consolidated edit before watching the movies individually. It's constructed to put everything into chronological order, which screws with the intended storytelling. The consolidated edit is really just a curiosity.

Out of curiosity, in terms of mangled storytelling, how does the Infernal Affairs chronological edit compare to the Godfather Trilogy 1901-1980? As much as peope lament the loss of the intercutting of Vito and Michael's stories in Part II, I'm fond of the scale and depth the whole story takes when laid out in its entirety. I suppose the inclusion of the deleted extras don't hurt, but then I hear nothing new is included for the Infernal Affairs chronological version.

In both cases I prefer to watch the original theatrical versions, but for what it is the Godfather miniseries works better than the Infernal Affairs miniseries. There's no new footage added to IA, and on-screen text that was meant to accompany flashbacks (scenes now occurring early in the movie) gives away later critical plot developments, such as "Three days before...."

Wait a minute... So what's called Infernal Affairs Trilogy is the same as The Godfather Trilogy - re-edited and consolidated three films? I thought that's just a box-set. And if I want to watch all three movies separately I should avoid any releases with "trilogy" on them?

The only releases that feature a chronological edit of the three Infernal Affairs are a few various boxset releases in Asia (HK and Korea) that contained all of the original films as well as the chronological edit and the Thai release I linked to above.

As far as I know, Infernal Affairs and the Godfather are the only "trilogies" that have been edited into a single feature and feature material that's been rearranged as to be chronological.
