Thai Region Code Question
 

I've come across some DVD's that are listed as Thai with a region code of 0, but when looking at region code maps and such, Thailand is listed in Region 3. What's up with that? I ask because bootlegs tend to be in 0 so that struck me as odd. I came across some of these on dvdasian.com, I've heard good things about the site, but are they known for selling bootlegs or strictly legitimate releases? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can't vouch for DVDAsian, but many Thai, HK, US, UK etc... discs are released and factory pressed as region 0. R0 don't not necessarily equal bootleg.

R0 often simply equates to a countries market being aware people from "the outside world" are buying their discs. HK discs are sometimes R0, so are some USA ones, surely?

Region coding is not an indicator of being a bootleg as stated before.

Most Asian releases are R0 just to make it easier to cross-import since some HK and Korean titles may not have the Thai language option.

Distributors have learned that a better way to cut down on imports is to limit language options.

Haute Tension was released as an R0 in Thailand, however, the original French language is not included. You either have to listen in English dub or Thai dub with English or Thai subtitles.

3 Iron is R0 but has no English subtitles. You either get Thai or Korean sound with Thai subtitles.

Then there are the titles that have more than one region code. Sony is notorious for doing this just to make it easier to produce discs.

The Thai release of Casino Royale (2006) is both R3 and R1. The Thai release of The Guardian (2006) is R1, R3, R4, and R5.

95% of Sony's Superbits in the US are also coded this way.

S.W.A.T. R1 is actually R1, R3, and R4.

HD DVDs don't even have region codes since the HD DVD group decided that it was a nuisance and not genuine protection.
