Chabrol recommendations

dont know if this belongs here strictly, please move if it doesnt.

Ok, I've seen four films from Chabrol, and it's obvious the man has talent but is also hit and miss. So please recommend some of his better stuff as I really like the ones where he is on song.

As a guide, I really liked La Ceremonie and La Femme Infidele. I know Le Boucher is considered his best but I thought that was a decent film but no more. L'Enfer I thought was quite poor.

cheers

Do you need English subs? If so, here are a few to be getting on with:

Masques
Inspecteur Lavardin
Poulet au vinaigre
Betty
La fleur du mal

... all of these are available in France as MK2 editions with English subs. The last title comes in a nice 2-disc edition with an interesting Chabrol documentary on disc 2.

I wouldn't consider Le Boucher his best, or even close. I absolutely love Les Bonnes Femmes, but that's one of his earliest films and maybe a bit unrepresentative. I would consider Les Biches to probably be his best film.

FWIW, Chabrol is one of my favorite directors (I would probably only rank Wenders, Godard, Hawks, Renoir, and Bresson higher...)
