Okay, I have to shout of the greatness of State of Play from the rooftops!

It's a 6-hour mini-series that has some of the best writing and acting I've ever seen on TV. I'd put it up there with The Wire.

It's about British media and politics and how one incident gets connected to a scandal and how the British press deal with it. And it's not as dry as I just made it sound. It's got an amazing cast and never ever talks down to the audience - its' extremely smart and very entertaining.

See this now before the American remake (starring Brad Pitt) dilutes it's effectiveness - I mean, one of the more interesting and unique things about it is it's "Britishness" and how it deals with UK government and press, which we don't see much of here State-side. And for you Life on Mars fans, it's got both the leads from that show, in addition to the amazing Bill Nighy, Polly Walker, David Morrissey, Kelly Macdonald and many others who all do great work. But the real star is the script.

I can't hyperbolize enough about this show - it gets my highest possible recommendation.

Jekyll is a great series as well. It's available for R1 now as well, and well worth the price.

cold feet is perhaps best suited to fans of relationship comedies, though it's more of a drama than a sitcom of course, even though there's one or two sitcom actors in the mix. more for a middleclass yuppie-wannabee audience, i think.

shameless has been a huge hit for channel 4, a slightly strange comedy drama that perhaps covers what america might describe as 'trailer trash'.

in short, both these are classics in their own time, but perhaps youtube might give you a taster to help you out.

Cold Feet is great, but its essentially thirtysomething, so if you dig that sort of show, you'd like it.

Primeval- Is really fun Sci-Fi. Better than Torchwood IMHO.
Hyperspace-not really al "laugh-a-minute" kind of show but hilarious all the same.
The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard- Story of a female PM in UK, def not Margaret Thatcher!
Bodies Pretty interesting Medical Drama
Another nod for the re-vamped Dr. Who franchise! Just finished S1 and have begun S2 and it's realllllly good!

Gotta Add

The Street excellent drama
The Bill everyone's favoreite copper show
Taggart another top notch police drama
Midsomer Murders Excellent Mystery series
Judge John Deed Great Court/Criminal Justice series
Life On Mars Great Copper show with the main character transported back to the 70's from the late 90's
Spooks simply the best spy drama series...ever
Vincent Private Eye series
Rosemary & Thyme Excellent detective series
The Vice Gritty vice squad series
Juliet Bravo good police drama, a litte dated but still very entertaining.
Lewis series spinoff of Inspector Morse now following the work of his DC, Lewis
Rebus Good Mystery series
Pie In The Sky Excellent Mystery Series. Definately dated, still good.
New Street Law Great courtroom/Law series akin to "the Practice" in the States.
Ultimate Force It's the S.A.S and it's damn good!
Jekyll Absolutely brilliant

Others I'm sure I mentioned b4 but can never be pushed enough...

Cracker
Prime Suspect
Kavanaugh QC
A Touch of Frost
Inspector Morse
Foyle's War
Hustle
Messiah
Murder In Suburbia
The Commander
The Govenor
Trial & Retribution
Blue Murder
Murphy's Law
