Le Boucher - best version ?

Could somebody please tell me which is the best version of this film that is english friendly ?

The r1 release is anamorphic but is a PAL-NTSC transfer and while the R2 UK edition is proper PAL, it is non-anamorphic. Any chance there's a release that's best of both worlds ?

Unfortunately, there isn't a deserving disc on the market that I can fully recommend. Perhaps, you will have to settle for the lesser evil...

thanks for the reply, shame though.

I have the French R2 edition of this (on the budget DVDY label) and while I can't comment 100% from memory I'm pretty sure it's anamorphic. In any case it was a very cheap edition (cost me 3€) and regardless of whether it's anamorphic or not it does contain English subs - there is no mention of this on the box, or indeed in the menu, but they can be activated once the film starts via your remote. I paid the same price for the same company's edition of "The Unfaithful Wife" and it too has "hidden" English subs. Don't know if either of these are still readily available, but I'm sure at the very least Amazon France's marketplace will have a copy or two...

got the cheap r2 french edition today, which comes with la femme infidele as a bonus.

Both are 16:9 with boucher being 1:78:1 and femme infidele 1:66:1. Both also have english subs and dolby 5.0 track. Both transfers look good, with boucher being much better than either the r2 or r1 (although still far from perfect).

nitin77: pleased to hear you were able to track down a copy and are happy with the results. Hope you got it for a good price.

FYI, there is also a very cheap R2 France disc floating around with "Juste avant la nuit" & "Les biches". Neither has subs but I think "Les biches" has a German audio track in addition to the French one. It's a flipper, but for 3€ or whatever it's not too shabby a deal.
