I bought my one (Philips 742) becasue it was as cheap as a non region free player (79$ CDN) and replaced the PS2 I was using.

The first titles I bought were I Robot and Day after Tommorrow. They were both Hong Kong versions and were special editions compared to the bare bones that were initially released in R1.

So many regions ..... so many titles:

R2 - Hong Kong Legends - great transfers, abundant and informative extras

R2 - lots of British titles not released in R1
including several Powell/Pressburger gems like A Matter of Life and Death, Gone To Earth

R2 - lots of U.S. films that get a better release elsewhere including They Live, Starman, Deer Hunter (all have directors commentary), and most recently Flash Gordon.

R3 - lots of Korean/Japanese/Hong Kong titles - most of which will not be released in R1, and those that are released will usually be more expensive here.

R3 - Shaw Brothers - the stunning project by Celestial to release over 700 titles in all genres from the legendary HK studio, lovingly restoring each one. The earlier releases in this project also have some wonderful commentary tracks.

R4 - titles not available or with OAR - six Weissmuller Tarzan movies never released on home video in any format on R1, Star 80 and Last Exit to Brooklyn, some fun Dame Edna early movies, and most recently 1900

....and that's just off the top of my head after only one cup of morning coffee!

I can't really remember now. I think it may have been Persona, or maybe La Regle du Jeu, or very possibly, Rosetta.

Wasn't really the titles, it was living in Japan at the time. Just liked to be ready to buy any title I wanted where I wanted.

The R2 box sets of The Prisoner and Thunderbirds (out in R2 years before R1), along with films like the unedited Eyes Wide Shut, and many British comedies like Spaced and Phoenix Nights.

For me it was Shaun of the Dead and Spaced, followed within a week or so by House of Flying Daggers.

Shame this thread was moved as it's missed the whole point of the poster's question!

Huh? The point is to discuss DVDs available on the international market not available in R1, prompting the purchase of a region-free player to accommodate international purchases - so the international forum does indeed seem to be the appropriate.

What exactly do you think this thread is meant to be?

I started off buying a disc to make my PS2 multi-region so that I could get the Hong Kong release of Battle Royale II long before it was released in the UK. I also wanted the then new ABUS Divimax release of Day of the Dead. Since then I’ve had a few multi-region players and I mainly buy series from the US that haven’t been released over here (original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series) and also uncut R1 releases of films that are cut in the UK.
