Looks pretty nice, but pretty pricy for a Russian set. Has anyone picked this up yet? I ordered the original DVD from these guys without a problem and I still haven't heard any dates for a US release (theatrical or DVD). I'm about to ask the manager there if he has any details on the extras -- specifically if everything on the 3rd disc is subbed or what...

got the reg 5 for sale in the exchange forum for 12 bucks shipped. English subs, Dolby 5.1 and DTS, also believe its anamorphic

OK, so which version of this film is the correct one and which one is the cheap bootleg? I might wait until the UK edition comes out cause I have already seen 2 different versions that are R5 today.

the three disk is a bootleg, because any Russian DVD with the Goblin soundtrack means it's a bootleg....not that there is anything wrong with it though. It's probably just like a very good quality legit DVD, only that it's a bootleg

Well, this statement is wrong. Goblin's popularity among the folks made some russian dvd producers include materials with Goblin. Some included his documentaries, some included his "funny" tracks, which I do not consider to be funny. This three disc edition of the "Night Watch" is absolutely legal, and it is produced by the same company, that had issued the first edition and also made the movie.
The Problem is that this 3-disc box has 2 awful mastering mistakes: DTS Track is not 5.1 but 4.1, because right rear channel is absent (but here's no problem with DD 5.1 track). And the second problem is that the first disc is not anamorphic. It is a simple letterbox.
So the edition is cool-loking and it has some interesting extraz, but I din' recommend to buy it.

thanks for the update. I got a reply from alldvd and he clarified a few more things about the set -- all extras on 3rd disc are subbed -- deleted scenes, etc.

What exactly is the goblin thing anyway? regardless of whether it's only in Russian, I'm curious.

Probably pass on this for the cost though if there's nothing perfect in the mastering.

There's an explanation of Goblin soundtracks in this thread:

In Russia, "Goblin" refers to a famous soundtrack dubbing guy that dubs foreign movies. This "Goblin" soundtrack features this one guy who dubs all the dialogue, including the actresses. At first, in the 90s, this was how dubbed Russian movies were. But now in 2006, this type of movie soundtrack dubbing is infamous and has a cult following. The current "Goblin" dubbed sountracks are basically joke soundtracks. Many current foreign bootleg DVDs released in Russia get an original soundtrack, a good Russian dubbing (with many different actors and actresses), and also the infamous "Goblin" joke soundtrack. I have the Two Towers Russian "Goblin" DVD and it is funny as hell. The Goblin sountrack turns a movie into a Monty Python movie...I have seen the Night Watch "Goblin" sold in Russian DVD stores, but I haven't bought it yet.

The main thing is that the "Goblin" version is not a different cut of a film - it's a joke version.

I'm waiting for something else - 100 bucks - yikes.

toddly6666 01-31-06 06:27 PM

RA, im just giving an example when I said monty python - that came off the top of my head since the last Goblin DVD I watched was the Two Towers movie, which reminded me of Monty Python's Holy Grail...It's not the point what the Goblin soundtrack exactly sounds like...it could also sound like Mel Brooks...it can also sound like an R-Rated Mystery Science Theater. It's always different for each movie...
