Missed your question...I have the Aussie disc. The comment on IMDB could be directed to both of those DVDs (though I do not have or have seen the Russian disc). From the little Russian I know however I can tell you for sure that the Aussie translation is a bit off (there are lines missing). I don't know if I would describe the subs as being awful but they are definitely off. This being said I just watched the R1 release of Quiet Flows the Don since I have to do a review on it and I think one can complain about missing lines here as well.
Not sure this helps much but there you have it.

I watched the Russian DVD and the English subtitles were excellent. Since the movie is sort of like Before Sunset/Sunrise, it's a dialogue-heavy movie, so I was pleasantly surprised that the english subtitles were very good, and is one of my third favorite Russian movies that I have seen the past years (Number 1 and 2 are Day Watch and Night Watch).

The most famous actor from that movie only had a bit part, Galina Tyunina, whom starred in the Night Watch movies.
The actor that played Petr, Yevgeni Tsyganov, starred in a Russian action movie called FART. That's almost as good a title as a recent Bollywood movie that had the title JISM.
