No Exterminating Angel... *scoffs* that's like a Godard Boxset without Weekend! Thanks for the news, Pro-b... even if it IS just a tad disappointing.

'No Exterminating Angel... *scoffs*'

My thoughts exactly. I'll still be getting the set, though...

Unless I am mistaken Studio Canal DO NOT OWN the rights to the film.

At this point I am surely annoying you, but it's arguably Bunuel's best film and there is absolutely no sign of a release in R1. Are there some particularly prohibitive rights issues that would keep a company from releasing? Perhaps difficulty finding suitable elements?

That one ("Exterminating Angel") and "Viridiana" are my most anticipated Bunuel films that don't seem to be nearing any English-friendly release. I also wish I knew what was up with these. Two of the best films from one of the greatest directors ever are just lying in limbo.

...it is a singularly weird/discombobulated 'collection' indeed: six of the movies are French, "Gran Casino" is Mexican, "La jeune fille" (assuming its original title is "La joven") is Mexican/American...

...imnsho they would have created a more 'elegant' collection by making it one including just the French movies (or else just LB's Mexican movies, many of which remain un-DVD'd - Simon Of The Desert, Wuthering Heights, Robinson Crusoe, etc.)...

...ah, well... some other time perhaps...

. . . . . .

Just saw your post. Yes, the reason is...Studio Canal do not own the rights for it. On another European forum was also discussed that the film is being restored. By what company? Certainly not Studio Canal...I see that there is some Spanish involvement but that is as much as I know. If anything comes up I will make sure to post, for now this is it.

Looks like these are released, but I haven't been able to confirm whether English subs are included. Anyone?

From the Criterion website:

Silvia Pinal to Appear on Upcoming Viridiana Release

We are pleased to announce that we have secured a video interview with Silvia Pinal, the luminous star of Luis Buñuel's Viridiana, for inclusion on our upcoming release of the film. This eleventh-hour addition will require us to postpone the street date, but given Pinal’s contributions to this and other of Bunuel's Mexican/Spanish films, we feel it's well worth the wait. Look for Viridiana in May of 2006!
