Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra...back on track!

Well, let's try one more time...

After being canceled twice and taken off the UK upcoming-releases charts the Monica Bellucci/Gerard Depardieu live adaptation of the popular French cartoon hero Asterix is finally back on track. While Fox-UK had the title in a rights-limbo for well over 2 years the rest of the non-English speaking world saw the Alain Chabat production and has already forgotten about the film. Needless to say a R1 US release is...not even considered.

Although I am not a fan of the Asterix series (and esp. the old series) this could have been a great opportunity for the anime fans to enjoy a rather surprising live remake...had it been released a few years ago. Regardless, the UK version is finally set for a July 17 release (Original French track/subs and an English dub for the non-purists).

I heard it was awful. But I'll see anything with Bellucci in it.

I've seen it sometime ago (3 years ago) and liked it. Very funny also because of Jamel Debbouze who is internationally known from Amélie. And Bellucci in luxury Cleopatra-clothing looks fantastic. The film is way more enjoyable then the first 'Astérix'-film and was a huge hit in France. Also at the time it was the most expensive French film ever (45-50 million euro).

But the film hasn't been treated well outside France - not only in the UK or USA - the German DVD is bare-boned not even the French language track is there. Too bad as the French 2-disc-edition (no English subs) has plenty of extras ...

I loved the comic book. A funny cavalcade of intrigue between the small the Roman Empire and a small village that refuses to fall under the Roman power. All the adventures are clever with amusing Latin names and funny action humor. A must read for those who likes comic books.

Cheers ,

Au contraire mon chere Pro-B. The animated Asterix films were released in Australia in english versions. They are out of print, but dvdorchard.com.au has them in stock.

Then I am 100% wrong!! I thought that the R4 discs were no longer in print...only Atlantic had some copies left last year but then they disapeared. Either way...I was wrong

I have the German DVD which unfortunately only carries a German audio track and, if I remember right, none or only German subtitles. I almost bought the Canadian release but no English subtitles there either. Sad that they don't put English subs on it in Canada. I would love to have both Asterix movies with French Audio Tracks and English subs as my Asterix & Obelix take on Caesar (UK DVD) only has English Audio.

Regards,
Dirk

The Korean edition doesn't have any English on it, but it's pretty nifty. It's got a DTS track and a 2nd disk full of extras.

If it helps anyone...

I followed the Asterix comic my whole life and:
1. the first Asterix movie sucked balls.
2. the second Asterix movie, Mission Cleopatra, was AWESOME. It totally captured the essence of the Asterix comic and is totally entertaining even if one is not a fan.

Yes, this (second) Astérix film is much better than the first one. And this is essentially due to director Alain Chabat (Didier, RRRrrrr!!!), who also plays Julius Caesar, and to the Canal + ensemble of comedians: Jamel Debbouze, Edouard Baer, and Les Robins des Bois. Debbouze essentially steals the show. And of course, Belluci is stunning as usual. Oddly enough, the most boring characters are Astérix and Obélix because Depardieu and Clavier are basically sleepwalking thru their roles... All in all an enjoyable romp.

Ciao,

I'm not a member so I can't read that article but are you sure this isn't about the animation film "Astérix et les Vikings" scheduled for 2006? As far as I know, Astérix conceptor Uderzo didn't like the 2nd film and has always refused that a 3rd film be made.

eXcentris:

Here's the little bit of info the French first came up with...

In fact Allocine was the site that first posted the news and then they started quoting Variety...Unless I am reading something incorrectly this should be a motion picture.

but, damn!! "les bronzés 3" ??? i ain't sure about that one

27 years after the second one, where will they be? a retirement home? Popeye trying to make a pass at the nurses? Jean-Claude still a virgin at 65 y/o?

not crazy about that release

Pro-B, thanks for the info. But from what I've read, Uderzo hasn't greenlighted the project yet. I hope he does but the film won't get made if he doesn't.

eXcentris look here:

(anything but Van-Damme)

"Alain Delon incarnera l'Empereur Jules César et Jean-Claude Van Damme l'athlète romain Cornedurus dans "Astérix aux Jeux Olympiques" ! Frédéric Forestier devrait réaliser le film en mai 2006."

FYI Christian Clavier will not be back as Asterix. Not going to be easy to replace.

Is it subbed or dubbed? I subbed a copy myself this year.
