Bunuel's Tristana from BFI (R2)
This came out of nowhere!
More Bunuel is more good!
It's got both French and Spanish versions:

not that IMDB is the be all of film info but they make mention that there is a longer 105minute Euro cut of the film, this BFI version looks like the shortened version.

hmm - maybe if the dvd was put out by some fly-by-night organization, but BFI's dvd division is akin to Criterion, where I doubt they'd let something like a longer Euro cut pass them by (especially considering that they're Europeans to begin with) - If a longer cut did exist, it may have just been something like an early cut that Bunuel himself cut down later. Or maybe the elements of the longer cut were not good enough to use.

Akin to Criterion... except in transfer quality, which generally speaking is certainly not bad but not first-rate either. I know opinions differ on 1.66:1 films, but I think their decision not to make this an anamorphic transfer is the wrong one. For that reason, I'm holding out for another release (hopefully from Criterion).
I've never heard of a longer cut, and this film moves at such an efficient pace that I wonder if it's even desireable, but I'd love to know if there are more scenes!

[BFI are] Akin to Criterion
My arse. Over priced, shabby transfers, video sourced 'film', burned in subtitles, no noticeable preadvertising, secret release dates, no noticeable POS material, no preview disc information, censored DVDs (without telling the buyer)...
One of the worst DVD distributors in the UK (and that's saying something).

Wow Danny.
I have about 5 BFI dvds myself, and have no major complaints.
But, of course, if the same film is on both a BFI and Criterion dvd, I will always go for the Criterion.

Oh, and the British tax payer gives money to the BFI.
Criterion need to provide a quality product or they'll go bust.
Maybe that's the problem with the BFI. The BFI do great work for 'films' and everything to do with cinema but I'm afraid their DVDs (and I own 50+ of them) tend to range from mediocre to crap. They do have a few gems but nothing like the quality of Criterion's back catalogue (much pinched from the French/Euorpean tax payers I might add).

Excellent statement Richard!!! I agree with you 100%. All the theories about 1.66:1 and anamorphic trasnfers...the dreaded window-boxing...I am all for 16/9 transfers. I own dozens and dozens of R2 discs and 16/9 is a must for me.
